I hope the Soto contract shocks him into this recognition and moves him to sell.

There might only be five teams that can do stuff like that. I do not think the Cubs are anywhere close to considering that kind of deal.

the Sox biggest contract is 700 million less than Soto's.

they are not even the same species as the high spenders

Even ignoring the total, Soto's $51M AAV is pretty close to the White Sox's total current payroll.

it's not like JR has decided to run counter and instead spend his money in scouting and player development so that he can succeed frugally

I’m against the Crochet trade. I think the Sox are making the same mistake here that they made with Sale, except unlike with Sale they are at least in charted waters but are still making the same bad decision.

I still have some faint hope that they will come to their senses. If they do they can fight for .500 next year with the right acquisitions, and from that they can maybe get to playoff contention in 2026.

Agreed. The Cubs can maybe do $200M. I mean really who can get to half a billion, Dodgers, Mets, Yanks, Red Sox?

The White Sox can't. The Cubs choose not to. The Cubs had more revenue than the Red Sox last year.

The Ricketts just stopped trying to pretend they were just baseball loving fans buying a team they love and now it's just a profit generator for a billionaire family.

Exactly. Played the fans and city like a fiddle.

I knew that Ricketts was FOS. Still happy Theo showed us what we could have in this town with legit owners. He left because he knew the party was over and the Rickett family successfully turned Wrigley into a theme park. I refuse to support the Ricketts until they spend like they promised. To hell with their station, park and merch.

The AAV is a different discussion than the years.

1. The Cubs think that more than 7 years or a contract going to an age beyond 37 is a bad investment. Steve Cohen doesn't give a shit about years 10-15 of this deal, in 15 years $50M will be the salary for a #3 starter after inflation.
2. Steve Cohen knows he's going to keep getting TV/Streaming money so he's not worried about a downturn in revenue. The Ricketts? Marquee is a bust because they did it three years too late.
3. Jed Hoyer believes that a $50M player plus two pre-arb players won't perform as well as three $17M players. But Jed also wants a strong farm system that would theoretically produce a lot of 1-1.5 WAR pre-arb players to go with a 7-8 WAR superstar. So he is just stupid here.
4. Reinsdorf would sell his son and one of his own kidneys for $50M, he wouldn't even offer Soto 2/100.

Of those 4, Mets TV revenue is the smallest. All of them, their revenue will fall. People are dying and people are bored. How many more years can they sustain "Swing hard in case you hit it." again, people will show up because everybody loves a summer picnic. But to actually watch the sport on TV? It's on life support.

Hopefully this subject is literal and Jerry dies with regret, having failed in his lifelong dream of a MLB salary cap

What should have shocked him "into this recognition" is when teams like the Royals and Twins managed to find ways to sign guys to nine figure deals.

His salary was only $2m this year. Let’s see how good they are in 2033.

Derp, who knew the MAGA Chud family from Nebraska would act like one? I was told on this message board ten years ago to expect a decade of dominance from the Cubbies, replicating what the Red Sox did in the aughts and teens. Pepperidge Farm always remembers.

My oldest son and I were talking the other day about the state of major league right now and with this fucking deferred money game that is being played right now by the dogass Dodgers and a few other fellow billionaire owned and run clubs, we believe that supporting baseball right now is ludicrously stupid. The dodgers supposedly announced that a beer next year will cost $30!

I don't know about anybody else, but I am angry but mostly pretty sad about how the ownership of these teams have managed to drive a great game away from generations of loyal fans who handed the game from fathers to their children for generations through depressions, wars, civil strife, etc. It used to be a place where the average dad could take his kid, buy a seat. Get a dog and a soda for his kid, have a beer and a dog himself and teach his kid who Luis Aparicio was, watch Billy Pierce duel Whitey Ford and watch Dave Nicholson hit one over the roof in Old Comiskey. Now???? It will not happen. BOOO! BAD FORM! :bom: :bom:

We’ve been over this before. In the expanded playoff era of MLB you don’t have to spend 700MM to compete against the Dodgers. You just need to spend enough to win 85 games. That ain’t a lot.

The Royals lost 100 games in 2023. They have one legit superstar in Witt Jr. They essentially signed 35 year olds Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha in mirroring 15MM AAV salaries to that 100 loss team and made the playoffs.

You don’t have to win 95+ games in MLB anymore, just win 85 and you’ll be in the playoffs 1/2 of the time. Then you just need to get hot/lucky in a 5 game series and you can say bye bye to the Mets and their 300MM payroll.

Deferred money is irrelevant other than to blow up the nominal value. Teams still have to put money in escrow the following year, and the present value still gets applied to the CBT level.

The bigger issue is the 10-15 year contracts. The NHL went through this problem and eventually capped contract length. MLB needs to apply the net present value over a maximum of ten years to determine the CBT hit.

Hawk, come to NC and watch minor league baseball. Season tickets for AAA Durham are $13 for sixth row even with 1B/3B, parking is $10, and beverage prices are reasonable.

You really think it was this contract that should make him think that?

Big money contracts have been spent for his entire 40 year run. I know it's bigger now, cuz things go up, but the Alex Rodrguiez and Albert Pulholos contracts shocked him as well. And that was 15 or 20 years ago.

He told his fucking kid, Michael, to sell the Sox and keep the Bulls after his death. That's what's gonna happen.

I'm with you on that, Chet. I do have three Class A teams within 20 miles of me and I go occasionally but even there is resentment of some of the pomposity of some of the millionaire draft picks. I actually prefer watching a good high school team match up with another one and go to a college game with a couple of old coaching buddies of mine or my sons when they are available.

I love baseball but now I've grown to hate the monstrosity that major league baseball has turned into. My two twin six year old grandson's have all the potential in the world and it will be fun watching them as they compete along with the other sports they love. Who knows, maybe they will find one that they can have fun advancing in. 8) 8) 8)

Just heard from a client who was a partner in the Sox. Reinsdorf recently bought him out and said Nashville is a done deal.

I heard something about a private shakeup in ownership as well, but my source has a big mouth. On the other hand, he also has a lot of connections

I'll wait for this to be one of Laurence's four breaking stories.
