Giants agreed to terms with outfielder Aaron Rowand, who had been with the Phillies, on a five-year contract.

The Giants were lucky last year when they missed out on Gary Matthews Jr. and Juan Pierre despite competitive offers. Still, no one really expected Brian Sabean to learn his lesson. Rowand gets a five-year deal at what's surely more than $10 million per season (probably at least $12 million) despite having just two particularly good seasons under his belt. He's a fine player even when he's posting 750 OPSs, but he's probably not going to age well because of the way he throws his body around and he's not the big-time middle-of-the-order threat the Giants needed. The team was already paying Randy Winn and Dave Roberts as if they were center fielders.

kenny, its time for you to go. you cant sign anybody. you say stupid shit in the media. money isnt even an issue with some of these misses, its your stupid trades and big mouth. you're done. thanks for '05, but enough is enough.

When you hear how much they are paying Rowand, you may be shocked. It's being reported that it's "close" to what Torii Hunter received. This info is directly from the Giants website.

If this is true, I don't blame Kenny. $15 mil or more for five years for Rowand is insanity.

I'm actually not upset that we didn't sign Rowand, especially for this money, but on the other hand, you have to overpay for free agents if you're serious about signing them, and our options are dwindling.

I expect KW to make noice via the trade route.

1. NO MORE OF THIS "I Don't Blame Kenny for not paying him"
2. $12 M a year for 5 years, he is 30 years old.

Was this a case of again not giving a 5th year?

It's like he and Jerry make the rules and everyone else should play by them, or else they are wrong,

this has been a disasterous offseason for the sox. they are misfiring on all of their targets.

at this point, i wouldn't mind unloading.

::thinking to self::
is carl crawford available? do the sox have enough prospects to trade for him?

thinking about the '08 sox makes my stomach hurt

Calm down Francis. Rowand would have crawled to sign with the Sox if they wanted him.

I guess the Giants website was trying to pump up the deal. 5 years, $60 mil are the numbers. Much more in line.

I'm not upset either because he told my cousins he wasn't signing with the Sox on Saturday night when they ran into him in a cab line in Vegas (button 48 ).

Carl Crawford is most likely not available since TB has traded a couple OF''s this off-season.

New rumor has the Sox taking Juan Pierre off the Dodgers hands now that they have Jones. Ozzie loves him from their FLA days, so it would make sense, and LA's need at 3B would be a fit with Crede.
Thoughts?

hopefully the sox can get a small enough helmet because he looks like a tool wearing his hat and helmet while batting

Did Juan Pierre learn how to hit or bunt? Ozzie also loved Cabrera. We know how that turned out.

Come on Coach, be fair.
He gets his 200 hits in 680+ ab's almost every year.
Unfortunatelly those 200 hits amount to about 250 total bases :(

I wouldn't trade Crede straight up for Pierre. Even if the Sox don't feel they can sign Crede they should get more than a homeless man Kenny Lofton.

Didn't you have a sig line once upon a time saying that JP was going to lead the Cubs to a world series?

I know you are joking but I've never liked Pierre. If you look back to the 2005 offseason I was mad the Cubs gave up all those prospects to get him for 1 year. I thought they should have kept Patterson because he had more upside.

He's the reason I stopped listening to B&B.
They bitchslapped every caller who had the audacity to argue that after 2004 Pods was as good of a leadoff hitter as Pierre. They called them (and me by association) baseball retarded, and it really pissed me off.
That was the point for me when their arrogance stopped being entertaining.

This is getting sad. I think I have until mid February to renew my ozzie plan. Somthing tells me I wont be doing it. Pierre would not add much to the club. If you are going to do that, might as well stick with Jerry Owens. This team had 3 glaring needs this offseason--the bullpen, OF, and a SS. I would be able to settle for a crappy OF if Kenny went out and got 2 or 3 legit bull pen guys. He got maybe one. I know its early, but its not looking good. Watch attendance dwindle and then they will slash payroll. Paulie, Thome, Javy will be gone by July if this continues.

You forgot 2B and one and two hitters.

It is not that early. This is when teams sign free agents, then everythign slows down in baseball deals and business for the holidays, then right after new years the reminader of the free agents worth anything start signing.

Pitchers and catchers start reporting to camps in February

If the Sox trade Crede I'd think they could do a hell of a lot better than Juan Pierre. How about Andre Ethier? Maybe they can throw in a pitcher or two (Broadway,Russell, Aardsma?) and get Matt Kemp? Owens is a better option than Pierre.

My first thought is that I believe he has 4 years and about 37 million left on his deal that he signed last year with the Dodgers. Any deal made with LA would have to include $$$ coming back, maybe $6-$8 million to make the deal a little more friendly.

Secondly, he's not known for being a strong defensive CF, especially a weak arm, so is he really even a CF or do they consider moving him to LF ?

The OBP, around .330 the past 3 seasons, needs to improve as well.

Basically, I'd be more willing to give Owens a chance given the salary and Pierre's limitations.

I've heard the Dodgers GM (Coletti) say that Kemp is basically untouchable.

I don't think we can much more than prospects for Crede or possibly a guy like Pierre, a player who no longer fits, and gets paid pretty well.

And a lot cheaper--money you can spend elsewhere. Any talk of Pierre is silly. Don't make a move just to show that you are active. If Pierre is being dangled, Sox should go balls-out lowball--I haven't heard of anyone else interested (although someone could be lurking).

I just hope that Kenny doesn't (or hasn't) put acquiring a CF above exploring other areas.

Much love to Kenny for the World Series DVD sitting on my movie rack...but with what he has let pass up and the dumbass statements he makes.I'd say its time to make some moves or move your ass out of your office and let a real business man step in ..for the love of god offer something to the free agents when they are in your office don't wait until they visit 5 other teams.
