I think the Sox will draft 1B Justin Smoak from U of SC. This is a goofy draft because there are similar rated players 1-12 and teams generally do not pick for need this high in the draft. If G. Beckham or B.Posey are available they would draft either one over Smoak but they'll both be gone so they'll go with the switch hitting slugger .

The only thing that would surprise me is if they didn't select a college position player.

I can't say I'm overly excited. When I look at Beckham, I can't help but compare him to Ryan Theriot who is a good player but undersized.

Maybe I'm not giving him enough credit and just not seeing his talent though.

Adding on, he looks like the kind of guy that might come up at SS, but will eventually end up at 2B.

Keyser what is it about this guy that gets you so excited?

The mlb.com scouting report on him isn't what you would call wildly enthusiastic--average arm, average speed, average power, undersized, probably best suited for second base.

I wanted Castro. AJ won't last forever.

Nothing wrong with being compared to the Quiet Riot. I wached him a couple times on TV and he can flat out hit. He'll be a .300+ 20 HR guy and ideal for the #2 spot. I'm excited because the Sox haven't had a franchise-type SS since Ozzie and that changed today.

Except this guy is a first rounder. I'm expecting more than a punch and judy 300 hitter as the 8th overall selection of the draft.

I haven't seen the guy play like you have, Keyser, but if he only has "average" range--as the mlb.com scouting report says--it sounds like he'll shift tosecond because Ramirez has tremendous range and his natural position is short.

The Cubs take closer Andrew Cashner from TCU.

He supposedly hits the high 90s on the radar gun.

I just heard on the radio that this guy isn't a great defensive short stop. Levine said he doesn't have good hands. Average range.

He said he might move to 1st or 3rd in MLB.

That's fine. Konerko's deal is done in a couple years. This guy goes to 1st. Fields is at 3rd. Ramirez is at 2nd or short.

He clearly was taken cuz he can hit. I'll bet if you start at short stop that probably means you can be a great defensive 1st baseman. It means he is a decent athlete to at least play short. Even if he's not great at it.

But he's supposed to have average power at best and he's undersized. So I doubt he'll play first. Mlb.com says he's probably best suited for second base, but if he's a mediocre fielder that could be a problem, too.

So are we ready to declare this guy a bust yet?

I think top 10 picks are expected to be on the MLB roster after 1 year of minor league ball at most.

Pretty sure that's the standard. He starts playing right now for the minor league club. So maybe a year and a half. If he's not on the 2010 Sox MLB roster you start to worry.

I'll give him one week in Low A ball before I do that.

Let's hope Kenny can redeem himself in the second round.

I wanted Castro or Wallace(whatever that 1B I posted earlier) I guess Kenny felt in a better place with AJ and Konerko and that they would be around a while.

Is an average fielding guy who will prob end up at 2nd base worthy of such a high pick?

Here's what Jim Callis of Baseball America had to say about the two Beckhams in this year's draft (the Sox got Gordon):

Quote:
Tim, who plays at Griffin (Ga.) High, and Gordon, who plays at Georgia (and isn't related to Tim), entered the year as the top two shortstop prospects in the draft and have maintained their status. Tim is still the better prospect and a candidate to go No. 1 overall to the Rays, though Gordon has closed the gap, moving from the back of the first round to a possible top-10 selection.

Tim is the best high schooler available, a potential five-tool athlete who should have no problems staying at shortstop as a pro. He's one of the better prep shortstop prospects in the last decade, though scouts consider him a notch below the Uptons, B.J. and Justin.

Though Gordon led the Cape Cod League with nine homers last summer, scouts still weren't raving about his power because he played in the league's best hitter's park at Yarmouth-Dennis. They're bigger believers after the show he's put on this spring, when he has hit .419 with 15 homers in 30 games and been college baseball's best player.

The question with Gordon is whether he can play shortstop in the majors, and clubs are split on the issue. Curiously, there's little waffling on either side. Those who think he can remain at shortstop don't appear to have reservations about it, while those who don't think he has no chance. There are enough teams that do believe in his defensive ability that if the draft were held today, he'd go in the upper half of the first round.

Tim projects to be better than Gordon with every tool except power, and he might catch him in that regard as well. That upside makes him more attractive. Gordon will get to the big leagues quicker, which will endear him to some teams, but the only way he'll get drafted ahead of Tim is if signability becomes an issue.

He hit .397, 24 HR, 65 RBI, 1.286 OPS and 17 SB in the best baseball conference in the country so I would hardly call him a punch and judy hitter.

He may end up playing 2nd. I read he's a 'natural defensive talent'. Either way I love the pick (obviously).

The Phil Rogers article in today's Trib keeps referring to Beckham as a "power hitter" fwiw.

Everything I have read has said that his top attribute was power, which suprised me given your reports TM.

I admittedly know nothing about any of these players. Everyone I have heard who does know something about these players seems comfortable with the pick.

As for me, I won't care until I see him at the Cell or as trade bait for a top MLB player.

Here's what Baseball America has to say....

Quote:
8. Chicago White Sox
Gordon Beckham, ss, Georgia
B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-0. Wt.: 185. Age: 21.

Scouting Report

After he went undrafted out of high school, Beckham has improved as much as any player during his three years in college. He started from his freshman season at Georgia, and hit 12 home runs his first season to help the Bulldogs in the College World Series and land on BA's Freshman All-American team. His batting average and power numbers have increased each year since. He won the Cape Cod League home run title last summer, and has shown it was no fluke by hitting 22 homes so far this spring. He has been among the Division I leaders in batting, home runs and slugging percentage all season. At the plate, Beckham is a home run threat to all fields. He has powerful forearms and snap in his wrists that lead to his above-average bat speed. After being known as a hacker early in his college career he is now regarded as a professional hitter. He makes good contact and consistently squares up balls and uses the whole field. While no one questions his ability to hit, scouts are split on whether Beckham has the hands to stay at shortstop. He has the instincts and is athletic with enough range and arm strength to stick at the premium position.

It looks like the original mlb scouting report on Beckham wasn't too far off.

I really really wanted Smoak at the time. Beckham worried me because he was really good only his Jr. year. That being said, once Beckham started to rake in the minors I thought he'd be good. Wonder if the dude was on PEDS.
