Sox drafted KW's son in the sixth round. This has almost universally been considered a reach on a player who, objectively, has holes in his game and personality. You would think a person who fired his scouting staff last year, had a major shakeup in his overseas scouting staff and whose minor leagues have been roundly criticized would be particularly sensitve to overdrafting someone in his family.

I'm sure Mariotti will use this in the near future. It won't be the focus of a column, but he will throw it in there as a shot he knows will hit KW.

Looking at it objectively I can see some issues here.

However, I am going to take up for Kenny Williams here. How many fathers get the chance to do something like this? If I was in that situation I would probably take a chance and make a reach for my son too in order to have him in my organization. Who knows, lots of reaches end up working out in MLB.

The Sox drafted Ozzie's son and Schueler's daughter. They also previously drafted KWJ. At least Reinsdorf had the decency not to do it for his sons.

I wish they would have drafted Ken Griffey's son.

Not that I don't think that at some point in his career, he didn't have (ahem) "help", but I'll lead the parade and cite Piazza as the embodiment of the family "reach" pick turning out well. But then again, I think he was drafted in one of the last rounds, so...
