The Red Sox are deep in conversations with the White Sox on a trade that would send infielder Juan Uribe to Boston, according to sources. Uribe is batting just .225 in limited playing time this season, but his three home runs are one more than all Red Sox shortstops have hit. Boston shortstops are 28th in the majors in runs scored and 23rd in RBI. It's not clear who the White Sox would get in return for Uribe, but one possibility is Alex Cora, the utility infielder who has fallen out of favor in Boston. Cora's brother, Joey, is the White Sox's bench coach. The White Sox want to rid themselves of Uribe's $4.5 million contract, perhaps in hopes of rekindling talks with Baltimore about second baseman Brian Roberts. If the White Sox could acquire Roberts, or another second baseman, they could shift Alexei Ramirez to shortstop and trade Orlando Cabrera, possibly to the Dodgers. The possibility of trading for Roberts and then dealing Cabrera was first reported by FoxSports.com. Chicago is still looking for a starting pitcher to replace injured Jose Contreras. They could try to deal Cabrera for Derek Lowe, although the Dodgers don't have much depth in their rotation and would be hesitant to part with him. http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/10907011/rss |

The Sox will be an interesting team to watch at the deadline this year. I still don't think they NEED to get any players but #1 for me is obviously a true lead off hitter. They could do absolutely nothing or swing a big surprise trade with multiple players. Dealing from a position of strength is a great thing though and that's where I think KW is right now. He could easily do nothing. |

The Red Sox have yet another prospect in Jed Lowrie, who is hitting .292 and went 1-for-5 in the Champs' 12 inning win over Seattle yesterday at Safeco Field. The BoSox current SS, Julio Lugo, is on the DL with a quad injury, and the scoop is his season could be over. The Dodgers are also looking for a shortstop with high priced free agent flop Rafael Furcal done for the season with lower back surgery. Trading Juan Uribe seems to make sense given other teams' needs, but I have only seen Alex Cora at shortstop & second base giving Lugo & Dustin Pedroia an occasional breather for the Red Sox. I'm not sure he can play third on a short term basis given Joe Crede's latest back stiffness that sidelined him the last 2 games. |

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal says the White Sox discussed Orlando Cabrera with the Dodgers earlier this month with the intention of acquiring Brian Roberts and moving Alexei Ramirez to shortstop. Nothing happened then, probably in part because the price for Roberts is sky high. The Orioles are believed to be leaning towards keeping their second baseman. The White Sox could always try for Mark Ellis or Mark Grudzielanek instead, but Grudzy probably isn't an upgrade and Ellis wouldn't be a big one. |
