C) This is how you feel better after the Sox get eliminated?

The old-As long as your team is not great, then maybe mine isn't too bad mentality, seen displayed exclusively by losers. I'm not going to celebrate the Sox elimination from the playoffs, nor rub anything in. I would have liked to have seen the Sox advance, even though the Cubs season ended in such a disappointing fashion. This thread is the dumbest I have seen all season. How did the Sox ruin anything for the Cubs? The Dodgers, it could be said, ruined the season, as they eliminated them. Some players, like Dempster, who held a walkathon (all that was missing, were the pledge sheets) in game 1, helped ruin the season, by under-achieving when we needed them to perform well most of all. But the Sox had no effect. The post is ridiculous.

Sorta funny, 2 years ago it was all about winning championships, now some sox fans are just happy to be there, I would say with the high payroll they brag about, they should have been expected to be there. I guess it must be nice to have it both ways.

Can't do much in season about the front runner for the MVP being out for the last month of the season and the playoffs....or an All Star third baseman. It was a minor miracle they made the playoffs.

Ozzie and Kenny both expected to make the playoffs in spring training, the players where saying, even before they knew what they had in Quenten, so to them, the season is a failure, I just dont understand why some, not all, sox fans think the season was a success and even more weird, it was a good season because the cubs didnt win, it makes no sense.

I am not trying to get into a pissing contest here, but one minute its all about winning it all, now its just happy to be there, when did this change? Mulligan said this morning that the sox losing was easier to take because the cubs lost, who and why would agree with this, petty is all i can think of. I will admit the who sox fixation on the cubs, a team that has nothing to do with them gets under my skin, but to me, anytime Ozzie or kenny bring them up, its just a way to avoid answering questions on a failed season.

This season was not a failure for the Sox. It was for the Cubs.

How am I wrong? Were the Cubs not picked to win the division, and be one of the best teams in the NL? Were they not picked to beat the Dodgers, and were they not the favorite to win the NL pennant?

Who picked the Sox to win the Central? Who picked the Sox over the Rays in the playoffs?

Sox set the bar higher with thier play this season, but with all the injuries they dealt with, it was a small miracle they made the playoffs. Winning those 3 games last week was the Sox maxing out on thier potential. They clearly just were beat by the better team in the ALDS. Sometimes, the truth hurts. The Sox season was more successful than the Cubs. End of discussion.

Frank you said at the start of the year that both the sox and cubs would not make the playoffs, so they both did, but yet the cubs failed and sox didnt, i am not saying what others said, its what you said and based on your prediction and logic, you arent making sense. Listen, I understand you hate the cubs, fine, i dont take issue with that or you, but you are sorta just now making it up as you go.

I agree with you, the cubs season is a failure, but so is the sox, just like every other team that doesnt win it all.

The difference is simple: In "your world", you're putting more weight on pre-season predictions and expectations to define success at the end of a season. In everyone else's world, save Panther, we look at the actual results at the end of the season.

In fairness, he's right.

Let's get back into the time machine here and head back to April.

Let's say I place a poll in each section.
In the Cubs section:
Would you consider the season a success if you win the NL Central and get swept in the first round of the playoffs?
The answer would have been overwhelmingly no.

In the Sox section:
Would you consider the season a success if you win the AL Central and lose 3-1 in the first round of the playoffs?
The answer would have been overwhelmingly yes.

Does anyone disagree with that assessment?

The White Sox moved much closer to winning another world series from where they were in the year before.
The Cubs stayed at the exact same level from where they were the year before.

Next year, expectations will rightfully be raised for the Sox and a first round playoff exit will not be a success but this year was a success.

i hate to say this but he's right.

The cubs losing is way more of a failure. The cubs were the favorite in the national league. The american league is way tougher. The expectations were understandbly (tigers and indians looked solid going in) lower for the sox.
and most of all

they won a world series 3 years ago.
it doesnt mean the sox organization or fan base is any less desirous of a title.
But the simple fact that they won a title since the titanic sank makes it less of a failure.

sox overachieved cubs underacheived.

The only way for this to be "right" is also ask White Sox fans "Do you have exceedingly low expectations for your team?" and the answer must be "yes". In that case, congrats. Keep going on TV after the only game you attended all year and screaming into the microphone "At least we won more games than the Cubs did in the playoffs!!!" on your way home from the season-ending game.

Anybody else see this dozens of times on the local news the last couple of days? My personal fave is the guy that spent $50+ on a giant "L" flag to take to the Sox game on Monday.

Yippppeeeeee!!!!!

Cooler heads prevail. At least somebody sees my point.

Low expectations? I said 83 or 84 wins for the Sox this year, which would have been +13 or 14 from last season. Thats a good amount of wins higher. As the season went on, Sox fans expected them to make the playoffs, they did.

An overwhelming majority of Cub fanx expected a World Series berth, they failed.

Your meatball is showing. This has nothing to do with the Cubs winning less games then the Sox. It is about one team showing great improvement from one year to the next, and the other not showing that.

It's not about exceedingly low expectations. It is about your team showing improvement and getting closer to winning a championship. The Sox went from bottom feeder to playoff team, and found at least 4 players who are young and can be built around for the future in the process. They outperformed two "better" teams and fought off the Twins.

If you look at it logically, the White Sox accomplishments this season would have been considered a success during spring training. The Cubs accomplishments would not, as they got no closer to a championship than the prior year.

Whether your name is Rick or Frank - you're basing your definition of "success" at the end of the season on what your expectations were 6 months ago, before the season started.
It would seem to me that the 162+ games that were played all year long don't mean anything to you, right?

The rest of the world is looking at the actual results at the end of the season. Both teams are in the same boat now - trying to bail water before setting out to sail next year.

Who are these teams?

So now you're taking credit for "fighting off the twins?" That doesn't seem to go along with everything else you're saying. I guess i missed the time when the Cubs were in a 1 team division and didn't have to "fight anybody off".

Was the Twins season a "success" in your eyes?

2007- last place
2008- division champions, 1-3 in playoffs

2007 division champions, 0-3 in playoffs
2008 division champions, 0-3 in playoffs

Which shows more improvement from 07-08?

The Cubs FAILED to live up to their fans' expectations. Pictures of brooms an talk of ending a wait were present on this site before the NLDS began. Mr. Reason -- I believe -- was the lone Cubs fan dissenter of the pairing with the Dodgers.
Sox fans might have predicted an ALDS series win, but I don't remember reading anything about a sweep -- no pictures of brooms. I thought the White Sox would have a tough time beating Tampa even with CQ and Crede in the lineup. I also don't remember much World Series talk from White Sox fans.
Finally, it might pain some Cubs fans to see the Sox actually win a Division Series game at home -- something the North Siders didn't come even close to doing.
