They pretty much did when he sulked after being benched last year.

Swisher is fine in my book. He didn't call out teammates and act like a douchbag like 'team leader' Orlando Ca-crabass

Please define "JACKASS".

They knew he was bit of a goofball before they traded for him. He was unhappy when he got benched. Who wouldn't. But did he say or do anything detrimental to the team - besides look at a bunch of strikes in that last playoff game?

Beef, I agree with you about "Dirty 30". "Mac" was saying pretty much the same thing about Swisher being unhappy down the stretch and Ozzie having no choice but to bench him when he really struggled at the plate.

I had no problem with him getting benched, and I'm sure he didn't either, as he was really struggling. Then he stopped being a goof and a clown. ...and probably sulked. WTF do you want the guy to do?

Interesting that he led all AL switch hitters in HRs and 2nd in RBIs last year. Is that like Mark Grace leading the majors in hits during the 90s? Ironically Ralfy Palmeiro had something like 4 fewer hits for the decade, but bucket loads of more HRs and RBIs. Stats are for PR departments and agents if you ask me.

I want a guy who was in the middle of the worst offensive season in the MLB for an everyday player to understand he was benched entirely due to his own play. He made some mention about wanting to get traded at the end of the year also.

Selective editing by Nas.
Where are all the posts about Corey Patterson being the better option over Swish?

It's in there. I just wanted to focus on Swisher. Patterson was a better option based on what the Sox gave up. A couple hundred thousand dollar experiment wouldn't have been that bad.

You had me, then you lost me. Patterson in CF would certainly have cost them the one win required to be in the playoffs.

I'll take losing a 4th corner OF, a prospect pitcher who has been traded three times, and a A pitcher who blew out his arm for a playoff appearance.

Swisher hit some big HRs, including a walkoff. Patterson would not have done that.

Also, Patterson can't play 1st base. So it would have been Dye, or Casey Rogowski, or some other scrub playing first when Konerko sucked/went on the DL.

Swisher was a bust on the Sox, but to actually believe that they still would have won the AL Central in '08 with fucking Corey Patterson as thier everyday CF is right on par with the stupidity of Steve's post calling the '08 Cubs a success.

OK, he's gone. Another base clogger is outta here.

I'm less concerned with who they get rid of (other than high priced underachievers) and more concerned with who they replace them with.

So far, I'm unimpressed - but the offseason is just starting to get underway.

Swisher wasn't flash gordon out there, but he was hardly a baseclogger either.

No shit Nas.

Frank pipe down champ - you're embarrassing White Sox fans.

SEVEN stolen bases and FIVE triples in five years is hardly the definition of a baseball player that's fleet of foot.

Hell, Konerko has pulled that off, granted it's taken him several more years. ;)

Its hard to steal a base or get a triple when you're watching strike 3 go by.

Nice attempted recovery Frank, but after checking with the third base ump - you did not CHECK swing... You whiffed. Miserably.

Why didn't he steal all the times he walked?

My point is that while he is not a barnbuner, he has some speed. AJ, Paulie, Thome, Uribe, Crede...thats basecloggers.

Regardless, I'm glad he's gone.

Q & A with Ozzie in the Tribune - here's the part on Swisher:

What about the disappointment of Swisher, who hit .191 after the All-Star Game?

It was hard because when we brought him here, a lot of people were excited [that] he would have a great career with the White Sox, but we got to the point that we went through the roster ... and we had a right fielder, left fielder, first baseman and DH. It was hard for us to find a place for him.

Was Swisher a bad influence in the clubhouse late in the year?

You've got to ask the players about that. To be honest with you, I was not happy with the way he was reacting at the end of the season. He wasn't helping me either.

The guys played 4 years of ball and had a career high of 263, yes batting .219 is not good, but was there a reason to see him as anything more than a .240 career hitter?

When he came here I called him Matt Stairs. Good 4th OF, unless you believe his hype.

The guy will play in the league for 10-12 years on 6 teams, bat 242, hit 207 HR's and live a great life.

If he hit .250 with a .360 OBP and 25 HR, he would still be on this team.

The fact is, he was the worst hitter in the AL for a person with that many AB.

Swisher is the same type of person as Ozzie was as a player. When he is playing well, you put up with his irritation. When he is not playing well, you want to pound the little shit into the ground.

He was one of the worst hitters batting average wise but he still managed a .742 OPS which is right around league average. Even in a down year he was able to do things like take walks, score runs and hit home runs that helped the team win games. The Sox did him no favors by moving him around the field and the batting order. I think he's going to have a nice run with the Yankees.
