A team from Chicago is showing interest in trading four players for Jake Peavy – but for now, it's not the Cubs. It's the White Sox. According to Padres personnel, Peavy met with Padres manager Bud Black late Wednesday night to discuss a trade overture from the Sox. Peavy, whose consent would be needed for a trade to any club, declined all comment after meeting with Black. Within the clubhouse, though, Peavy referred to the situation as “something to think about” yet also restated his desire to stay in the National League. One of Peavy's teammates said he believes Peavy respects the Sox's aggressiveness in pushing for him but may have reservations about pitching for Ozzie Guillen, the White Sox's volatile manager. The Cubs and Padres were deep into trade talks in December, but the Cubs walked away, said Padres General Manager Kevin Towers. The Padres are about $5 million above the $40 million player payroll that Towers said the club's majority owner, John Moores, has mandated for this season and could hit that number by moving Peavy, who is due $11 million this season. I hear that Jake might not okay the trade, because he wouldn't play for Ozwaldo! |

This would be HUGE for the White Sox. They should do whatever it takes to get this done. Assuming he would play for Ozzie, of course. |

Peavy said in the spring that teams he would okay a trade to, were the Cubs, Astros and Braves. This is never gonna happen. Why would a guy want to leave beautiful San Diego, who has a spacious ballpark to pitch in, to go pitch for another losing team that has a far smaller, hitter friendly park? Answerr: he wouldn't and won't. Plus, unless the Padres picked up at least half the money owed on the contract, Kenny would never be allowed to make such a deal. |

No way this happens. The sox aren't paying for him and they don't have enough to give the padres in return unless beckam is included. He will be an Angel at some point in time this year. The padres want young cheap talent. The angels are loaded at AAA with alot of position players who will be out of options after this year. They have no room for them in the majors and therefore they must trade them or risk losing them all together. I know they don't like to trade, but this one is going to happen. It just makes way too much sense for all parties involved. |

What is the source for this? I consider this to be a bad rumor unless proven wrong. No way are the White Sox taking on payroll, and we know SD isn't taking on any in return. |

Sounds like it could be real close... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- White Sox, Padres Discussing Jake Peavy By Cork Gaines [May 21 at 9:09am CST] 9:09: Via Gonzales on Twitter: "Waiting for approval from Peavy on SD trade, according to source." 6:51am: Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that the Padres are in discussions to send Jake Peavy to the White Sox. According to Padres personnel, Peavy met with Padres manager Bud Black late Wednesday night to discuss a trade overture from the Sox. It is apparently a four-player offer, which would presumably gut Chicago's farm system. Peavy would have to approve any trade and according to Krasovic Peavy is telling people that the trade is "something to think about." However, Krasovic says Peavy "may have reservations about pitching for Ozzie Guillen." MLB.com's Corey Brock asked Peavy about the rumor. He said, "I only know what you guys [media] know." Brock expects the Padres would require a frontline pitcher like Aaron Poreda. Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald makes the Poreda link as well, but finds Peavy's contract prohibitive. Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune says the Padres had a scout watching the White Sox last weekend in Toronto. Meanwhile, SI's Jon Heyman says Peavy still prefers the West or Midwest and the NL. Heyman likes the Cubs or Brewers. |

The Score is reporting 'a deal is in place and the teams are awaiting Peavy's approval.' If this is true the Sox are taking on more payroll and they do have the talent to acquire Jake Peavy. Even if he doesn't approve the deal this shows everyone that Kenny isn't backing up any trucks. I fuckin love him!!! |

Why wouldn't they ask Peavy BEFORE negotiating? Seems backwards to me. But oh man, this would be huge. The Sox farm system would be gutted entirely, but I think it's worth it. |

This will be fun, to see how the Sox guys react to this. When the Cubs were talking about trading for him, it was all horrible, he cost too much, he was overrated, etc. Hmmm now it seems some tunes have changed. Peavy has not been anything special this year so far, is he really worth gutting your farm system? |

I fuckin love him!!! John Heyman at SI is also reporting a deal is in place. The White Sox have reached agreement with the Padres on a trade for Jake Peavy but are awaiting Peavy's approval now, SI.com has learned. Peavy has full no-trade power and the trade will be entirely his call. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported this morning that the sides were close to a deal. This makes some people around here look pretty fuckin stupid, huh?? |

He's still expensive, but we'll see if the Padres are eating any of that. In this AL Central, despite the Sox offensive struggles, landing a pitcher of Peavy's caliber instantly makes them virtual favorites to win the division. Peavy has not been anything special because the Padres are fucking terrible. Sure, his ERA might jump a bit at the Cell and being in the AL, but anytime you can land a Cy Young winner for a few prospects, you pull the trigger. Unless you name is Jim Hendry, I guess. |

Unconfirmed reports say it's 4 players for Peavy. Richard, Poreda, Getz and Lillibridge. Possibly Alexei in place of Getz or Lillibridge. |

Sure, his ERA might jump a bit at the Cell and being in the AL, but anytime you can land a Cy Young winner for a few prospects, you pull the trigger. =-=-=-=-=-= This is the scary part, and I was willing to admit this when the Cubs were in on him. His splits aren't just a little different, they are VERY different. Breaking down his strike out numbers, his ground ball and fly ball ratios and all that, it seems like it won't be a HUGE leap, but still something to consider. That being said... I agree, you pull the trigger. But I'm not so sure you can blame Hendry for the failed talks before. He did his work, but without an owner that deal had no chance. |

RFDC, I never said that. He's a lot of $, but the Cubs were idiots for not getting that deal done. |

But Frank, you don't know why they didn't get it done. Hendry had to walk away from the deal, but we never really found out why. Most likely, it had to do with the ownership situation, and while that entire debacle is a mess, you can't really blame Hendry for that. |

In case you guys didn't catch this: Peter Gammons just came on and said Peavy called Scott Linebrink last night and asked him about Chicago and how he was worried about how the Cell is a Homerun hitting park. Linebrink said he loves Chicago and Peavy will do just fine. Gammons believes the deal WILL BE DONE and Peavy WILL agree to the trade. The only stipulation, is i do believe the Sox will have to pick up his 2013 option, which is pretty hefty! So, basically, we have 2 aces on our team now, for the next 4 years! (Buehrle/lefty, Peavy/righty). I agree, hurry up and get here, so you can bat against the Pirates this w/k end! lol.. |

I usually do not post here in the Sox section but it just seems to me that while Peavy obviously makes them better I have heard that the Sox farm system depth is shallow right now anyways. I guess with an aging team Kenny is going to take one last whack at it and then be content to suck for the next couple of years while they try to reload. How much longer is Peavy signed for? |

what are the sox said to be giving up? This could just be a move to raise his value to his true destination. This just does not make sense. He also hasn't been all that good this year. |

There is a major difference in how the Cubs & Sox structure contracts. The Cubs like to backload their deals, while the sox keep'em flat. That's why Sox 2010 payroll obligation is $45mil, while the Cubs are @ $120mil. You don't need a U of C econ degree to see why the Sox can take Peavy's contract on while the Cubs might have blinked twice.
