Fantastic! Fields needs to go and the sooner this happens the better. I've said I think Beckham should spend the entire season in the minors but Fields has been even worse than I thought (and I thought he'd be bad). Detroit is making a run and the Sox can't afford to give any more games away with terrible defense and zero offensive production at 3B. Play Nix at 3B for now and call Beckham up in a couple weeks after he gets a little more comfortable with his new position.

by Dave Van Dyck

The White Sox's first-round pick in 2008, Gordon Beckham, was not among the names mentioned in the trade for Padres pitcher Jake Peavy, and part of the reason is that the Sox may have plans for him sooner than expected.

Beckham had started 26 games at shortstop and four at second base for Double-A Birmingham before starting at third base in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Friday. Why third?

"Because we wanted him to," Sox general manager Ken Williams said.

What is Williams' thinking behind the move?

"I'm thinking I want to see some production out of some people or I'm going to start making some changes," he said.

The Sox already have sent infielder Brent Lillibridge to the minor leagues and have watched third baseman Josh Fields and second basemen Chris Getz and Jayson Nix struggle. Veteran backup Wilson Betemit has been shaky in the field.

Beckham, who went 3-for-8 in the doubleheader, is hitting .299 and has been charged with seven errors.

Chris Getz went 1-for-3 with a run scored in tonight's 4-0 White Sox shutout of the Pirates at U.S. Cellular Field batting 9th in Joey Cora's batting order. While the batting average isn't all that great, which I believe is now up to .246, the Sox are actually more than satisfied with Getz at second defensively. I want to see a lot more of Getz at second base, and I believe he can hit left handers as well as he can righties. I think Getz is the least of the Southside issues and his batting average will rise once again. Third base is a completely different issue, in part because Joshua Fields is among the A.L. leaders in strikeouts with 44 coming into tonight's game & Wilson Betemit's defense has been dreadful to a point where if he's not giving Paul Konerko an occasional breather at first base, what good is he?

He won't be brought up 'cause the Ranger said so!

You fucking idiot. Has nothing to do with Ranger.

They want him to have AT LEAST one FULL season in the minors. He's going to be on the White Sox. He's going to be a star. No need to rush him.

Josh Fields sucks...He can't field. His name should be "Josh Ole Bullshit."

Seems like just months ago we were stacked at 3B... Crede and Fields! How rapidly things change.

Take a look at Crede's numbers...that are not all that much better than Fields. And, he missed a few games with a hammy and a back flare up.

I agree Frank. Wasn't advocating keeping Crede at all... it just seemed two three years ago that we were set at 3B for the next 10 years. Of course, two three years ago we still had no center fielder, so I guess you can't have everything. :P

Josh fields should be gone. This is a no brainer. There is a spot at 3b and Beckham should go there. NOW

Bringing him up before June 1st is a colossal business mistake... even with the gaping hole at 3B. They need to wait it out.

No White Sox game goes by without JOSHUA (That's his name, folks!) striking out to end the top 1st in Anaheim...

I expected a high number of strikeouts, a .250 average, bad defense but legitimate MLB 3B power. He has not met even these mediocre wishes.

The Score is reporting that Beckham has been promoted to AAA. No word on if he will be playing 3B or SS. I'm hoping it's 3B.

Keyser, as far as I know, Gordon's playing third base...JOSHUA Fields, who is NOT in tonight's lineup in favor of Jayson Nix for the third game of this series in Anaheim, might be sweating...

Beckham makes start at AAA. It's just a matter of time now. What does the all knowing Ranger & Frank think about this? PS he was 1-4

The Ranger posted something about Beckham's possible arrival before September 1st in his latest blog at 670thescore.com, and I tend to agree. If Gordon Beckham comes up to the big club before September 1st when rosters expand to 40, it means one of two things. First, the White Sox look like a M*A*S*H unit with a myriad of injuries. Second, they're so far out of contention in the A.L. Central and the wildcard that the Southsiders have no choice but to see if Beckham is as good as advertised. In plain English, it's a lost season for the Sox. Also, I think the White Sox have had a long history of prospects that didn't work out long term once they arrived at 35th & Bill Veeck Drive, such as Joe Borchard & Scott Ruffcorn. Remember them, Sox fans? Neither player worked out, and that may explain in large part why Duane Shaffer was shown the door last year as the team's Director of Scouting.

Not so fast, Walt. While Beckham's promotion to Triple "A" makes you think that the White Sox are grooming him to play third base, that's still a subject of debate according to SCORE/Sun-Times White Sox insider Joe Cowley. Joe seems to think that Beckham could be in line to replace JOSHUA at third and/or Chris Getz at second base based on what he told Zach Zaidman last night. Also, let's not forget the Sox have another third base prospect in Dayan Viciedo. He curiously in Spring Training got Joe Crede's #24, but may not necessarily play third once he arrives on the Southside, too. As for Getz, I want to see more & more of #17, even against lefties. He's the kind of ballplayer, Walt, Ozzie wishes he had more of.

Fields is hitting well of late (11-31 (.355) last 10 days) Until he goes back into a 0-20 slump, Beckham will stay at AAA.

Fields was 0-4 last night! Who belongs in the minor leagues Josh or Beckham? Who will help this team win ? That's the question that needs to be answered.

WALT IS AN ASSWIPE!

Apparently the asswipe has also missed the last 2 weeks. The Sox hae won 10 of thier last 13 games, with Gordon 'Christ' Beckham still in the minors.
