Post subject:  Who is tradeable

Obviously there are several players other teams would take. I'd like to know who is tradeable for legitimate prospects without eating salaries. I think that shortens the list. There are some players the Sox might be better off keeping, offering arbitration and getting compensatory picks:

Thome- someone will want him with his high OBP and left handed bat but I think it will be a salary dump. He can only be traded to an AL team and only to a team in need of a DH. How about the Red Sox.
Dotel- he should be the one to really bring in some players. EVERY contender from both leagues will be coming to KW for him
Dye- He would be a nice pickup because he can play the field and DH, has lots of playoff experience, hits for power and when he gets hot, is MVP level hitter. He might be a nice fit with the Cardinals. He would look pretty sweet batting behind Pujols.
Podsednik- what a crazy world it is when Pods is pulled off the scrap heap and then can be traded for prospects. He would be a nice playoff pickup for some team because he can pinch run, makes nothing and is on a 1 year contract. To tell you the truth, he might look good in Cubbie blue if they can close the gap.
Contrearas- if he can string together a few more good starts, he suddenly would look very attractive to a contender. He is expensive, but is done after this year. He has playoff experience and can be dominant.
Colon- If he can pitch, someone will take a flyer on him. The Sox will get nothing, but someone will think he might be decent down the stretch as a 5th, someone like the Mets.

The other two possibilities are Konerko and Pierzinski. The rumors have always swirled about Konerko and the Angels. I don't think they can just get rid of everyone and Konerko has another year on his contract. I know that Allen is giving lots of hope for the future at AA, but I think Paulie stays.

AJ might get you something. He is a lefthanded contact hitter with a little bit of pop. He is a playoff tested catcher. Still, I don't think the Sox would feel comfortable handing the job to Flowers just yet and AJ has another year on his contract. I think he stays as well.

to trade contreras you'd need to eat about 90% of that salary. konerko is overpaid for what he is, so he wouldn't bring much. same with thome. pods has no real value. colon is worthless.

the only veteran guys who might bring legit prospects would be AJ, dotel, linebrink, jenks, and dye.

Why would Dye be a good fit with the Cards? They already have a glut of outfielders.

Unless your name is Matt Thronton, Aaron Poreda, Carlos Quentin, Gordon Beckham, Bobby Jenks, or Mark Buerhle, you can be traded.

If they could get a King's Ransom, I suspect they would trade Thornton. He has a much value as anyone on the roster.

Dye is the interesting one - as I think he has a limited No Trade that includes a lot of the East Coast teams.

The trading deadline is going to be a big-time buyers market. There will be teams looking to get out from under contracts and will take back little talent to do so. Just look at the Peavy deal. That wasn't a lot of talent to give up for a player of that caliber. Kenny can really set this team up for the next few years by being a buyer rather than a seller.

Why is Poreda on the untradable list?

Absolutely, though I would add both John and Jordan Danks.

Quite frankly, I'm not sure who the White Sox can trade unless they can eat a big chunk of the players' salaries such as Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko & Jim Thome to name a few. Even though he's out today with a thumb injury, Konerko has a "no trade" clause in his contract, but is willing to waive it if it means possibly finishing his career with a contender. Dye & Thome both earn over $10 million this season, but I'm not so sure they have much value either.

In today's baseball world you either eat salary or get prospects. The Sox rarely eat salary.

Thome is a left handed power hitter. The Cubs paid 10 million per year for that.

Good Dolphin, unless the White Sox trade Mr. Thome to an American League team right now, he's got no value. You won't see him at his position by trade, first base, once the White Sox head to the National League ballparks starting tomorrow in Milwaukee, even if Paul Konerko and his thumb are out.

I am extremely skeptical that the White Sox would get back anything more than a mid-level prospect for any of the players who are free agents after this season (Dye, Dotel and Thome). Unless there is an unexpected bidding war amongst a few teams, or the White Sox pay the remaining salaries (which they don't have a history of doing), they are going to get back guys who, at best, are decent prospects.....Contreras had a great outing against the Tigers, but I think there's a much stronger possibility that he reverts back to his 5.00+ ERA form over a dependable/effective starter, and with the remaining salary he'd be owed in the last 2 months+ of the season, the Sox should just be happy to find a team that would even chance taking a guy like that.....What I hope doesn't happen is a Bobby Jenks deal, which I'm worried that Williams can justify beacuse he has some hard throwing (Thornton and/or Poreda comes to mind) options, and Jenks can probably bring a bundle of younger players being a few years from free agency.....Looking at the club, with Contreras, Thome and probably Dye/Dotel off the books for next season, the Sox are going to save approximatley $40 million dollars so, in what could be another buyer's market next off-season (depending on the economy), the White Sox could put some of that money (though I would highly doubt that they spend all of this freed up money) on a few holes (2B, OF, or more pitching), add in some of their younger players like Beckham for a full season, and then lean on guys like Buehrle, Danks and Floyd as a base for a competitive rotation in a weak division.

Jenks could have some good value on the open market. Why keep a great closer on your team when there's nothing to save (for the most part)?

They could hang onto them and go for the draft picks in what looks like a weak free agent pool.

yeah and offer arbitration to a 40 year old broken down DH who makes $14mil.

To me, the 2 best options are Thornton and Jenks. What contender (I'm thinking Milwaukee) doesn't need 1 if not 2 good bullpen arms, including a World Series winning closer. We all know its only a matter of time until Hoffman starts throwing his changeup for BP again. Throw in Gavin Floyd, and that would round out the Brewers pitching staff.

Dye and Thome would both be great fits for AL teams that need a DH (Dye because it hurts me to watch him try and run to anything not hit right in his tracks)

I would argue that, even for a team like the White Sox in transitition to a younger version, Williams believes he can have the team in contention for next season.

I'd rather free up the money rather than pay him and gamble that he'd stay healthy AND continue to produce at his age.

So has Dye, or damn close. They can trade Thome or let him walk. Try and resign Dye as primiarily DH, and play him in right maybe 8-10 times a month.

What about moving Fields? He should still have value.

How about taking a flyer on Juan Pierre if the Dodgers would pick up most of his contract. Manny will be back and Juan goes back to the bench. Ozzie likes Pierre from their Marlins days. He would help us play more "small ball".

By the way Thome is on pace for 33 HR, 106 RBI, 405 OBP, and is lefthanded power...but I'm sure the Red Sox would love to continue with the way Big Papi has been going.

Dye might be a good fit for the Rangers. Could hit DH against lefties, spell Nelson Cruz in RF.
