He's only 27 and has a power arm. The only thing I can think of is Kenny is going to trade Dotel and slide Pena into his bullpen role. Pena was the D'Bags opening day closer last season but quickly lost the job due to ineffectiveness. Kenny just made the bullpen a little younger and could get a prospect or two for Dotel.

He's 27 years old, a power arm, and he'll probably replace Dotel's role next season. I don't think this guy is very good though, at least from what his numbers say, but Williams probably thinks he has a lot of potential. Finally, in what is probably the biggest thing to note, I think this puts to rest any talk that Williams is going to be selling. It would take a complete collapse for the White Sox/Williams to not continue to see what he can do to improve the roster.

Yes, we needed to all say that again.

White Sox Acquire Tony Pena
By Eddie Schmid [July 7 at 7:13pm CST]
According to Jesse Temple at MLB.com, the White Sox have acquired RHP Tony Pena from the Diamondbacks for 1B prospect Brandon Allen.

Pena, 27, had been serving as a late-inning reliever for the D'Backs, where he's amassed a 4.24 ERA and 26/11 K/BB ratio in 34 innings. Pena is cheap and under team control through 2012.

Allen is a 23-year-old prospect with power. He's struggled since being called up to Triple-A earlier this year, putting up a .584 OPS in 13 games so far, but he mashed in the minors last year, putting up a .972 OPS in 153 Double-A at-bats.

This looks like a decent return for both teams. Pena has allowed quite a few more hits than usual this year, but sports a .352 BABIP that could be due for regression. He could be useful in the back end of the bullpen. John Sickels at Minor League Ball rated Allen the fourth-best Sox prospect before the season. This deal pretty much solidifies the Diamondbacks as sellers, so it'll be interesting to see if they move any more pieces before the deadline.

Brandon Allen was drafted in 2008. It might have been the case that everyone but the White Sox thought he was a top prospect in their system. It's worth noting that hitters of Allen's type tend to hit their stride later than players at other positions, but I think KW knew what he was doing here.

Re: Kujoe, the D'backs are intent on moving Felipe Lopez and appeared ready to deal Brandon Webb until injuries put him on the DL for what might amount to be the entirety of the 2009 season. They'll likely hold on to their young core - Reynolds, Jackson, Upton, Young, and Scherzer - while dumping the aged in favor of more prospects moving in.

I hope he still does that nifty crouch behind the plate where he actually ends up doing the splits and sits flat on the ground. That would be cool.

edit: I think he's 27 and has a power arm.

We haven't had a power bottom since Slash was QB'ing the Bears. Good move.
