Should this have exclamations or not? We got him for nothing in return aside from cash owed on contract. What do you guys think? Good or bad from a baseball perspective. Talk to me.

That contract worries me, especially for a player who has underachieved the last 2 years.

Definitely need to worry about the contract, but he is a young guy. Plenty of time for him to figure it out and he used to be pretty highly acclaimed.

For his defense alone, I think this is a great move for the Sox. Time to sit Carlos!

Is he going to be a 4th or 5th starter? So Pods goes to the bench. Another stellar move by Kenny. By the time Peavy pitches they will be 8 games out.The team doesn't need him now they need pitching starteras and relievers

You have made a lot of ridiculous comments today. Do you have a case of the Monday's?

I had a post a little while ago saying that Kenny needed to clean up the bottom of the roster. He got rid of Fields and Wise (assuming he's gone) and brought in Kotsay and Rios. I'd say that's an upgrade.

Stone was all over this one! Pretty good for a guy who is suppossed to be a baseball insider who works for the team who said they would never get him.

Define irony; Cub fans telling people to worry about bad contracts.

But I just LOVE watching those same people backpedal hours after and stumbling all over themselves. Much like Hub did on B&B the day of the Cutler trade.

So the only downside is if he doesn't live up to the money then is what I'm taking from it. I hope KW meant to do this and he didn't get caught like they're saying. Either way as a fan I like getting a good player on my team. Just don't get to watch many (any) Toronto games so haven't really watched him play at all.

I have a hard time believing that a GM as budget conscious as Williams is going to put a claim in on a guy making as much money as Rios just to keep him away from Detroit, who I don't even believe would have taken on that contract themselves. I'm guessing that Williams, knowing he had money to spend this off-season, didn't think he was going to get a better player than Rios, and made the move.

You are just a pawn in the game being played by the best GM in Chicago since Jerry Krause.

That fits well into the way he's conducted his business for awhile. When he can strike despite it not being the typical time. He decides on player value and moves. Doesn't have to be old boy "winter meetings" style shit. Do it now who's stopping you. On another note, who was that notoriously bad waiver mistake made for/by a few years back I think? Piazza? Some other expensive guy to Boston or something by accident?

I recall Randy Myers ending up in SD a few years ago through waivers.

Do you watch the fucking games? What would Rios have done to have changed the 1-2 record with the Injuns. I got green$$$$$$ that says when Jake starts they will be 8 out.

Hawkeye, you might be referring to Randy Myers going to the Padres some years back...

From wikipedia

Quote:
The Padres' 1998 waiver claim of Myers is considered one of the biggest blunders in the history of the waiver wire. The Padres did not want Myers, mostly because of the $12 million and 2 additional years remaining on his contract as well as the fact that they already had an established closer in Trevor Hoffman, but placed a waiver claim in order to prevent him from going to the rival Atlanta Braves. They expected the Blue Jays to rescind their waiver claim, but the Blue Jays instead allowed the waiver claim to go through, leaving them responsible for the rest of his contract.[2]

I know this is useless for now, but for next year:

Pods in left, Rios in Center and Quentin in right.

Dye is either gone or the new DH.

I still can't believe Ricciardi let him go for nothing. He's only 28 years old and has 14 HR's and 19 SB's. He could go 20/20 and plays very good defense (in center). Ricciardi needs to be shit canned.

Good Bye, Dye.
Dye is going into the same August-September offensive tailspin he did last season.
Dye won't be re-upped..... if he is not soon put on waivers and moved himself.

Yup, you guys got it that's the one I was thinking of. Maybe they DL Quentin and he can come back in early Sep when he and the Peavy freight train start rolling on the South Side!!! :drunken: :D

Anyone know when he'll be in the lineup? I hope soon, those Cleveland games were brutal.

I watch the games, but to say they are going to be 8 games out by August 28th is plain stupid.

Do either of you really care who is the one who breaks this? All of these guys are wrong much more often than they are right.

And BF, may be time to let the Stone hate go.

Pods is not coming back next year. If he does it will be strictly in a reserve role. His defense alone makes him expendable immediately. I would not be shocked to see Dye back for one last year (he has a dual option) with the OF of Quetin, Rios and Dye. The hope would then be that by 2011 Jordan Danks will be ready to come up and then shuffle up the OF from there.

He hit .291, but with just 15 homers and only 79 RBI. This year, he's hitting just .264. Hell, in his "big year" (2007) he only had 24 homers and 85 RBI and they are gonna be on the hook for 57 million for these kinds of numbers....no wonder Toronto let him go for nothing.

I love this move. I went on the record hoping they made a trade for him before the deadline. He is a young guy that is about to enter his prime. His contract isn't outrageous. He is a career .285 hitter that can steal bases. Dye isn't going to be productive forever and may not be back. You also can't count on Pods to have another year like he is having now. The Sox did that in the past and it bit them in the ass. Another great move by Kenny. He keeps showing why he is the best GM this city has.

When I first heard about the waiver claim I wasn't thrilled. In one of the many 'Kenny should sell threads' I said fuck next year I want them to win this year and the Sox are definitely a better team today than they were yesterday. Hopefully Ozzie can keep Rios motivated and playing hard for the next few years.

Rios's power numbers can only go up playing at the Cell, and his defense can only get better playing on natural grass.

This is a great move and I love seein Elmhursteve and bigfan wearing green yet again.
