Beckham voted TSN's AL ROY

CHICAGO -- Chicago White Sox third baseman Gordon Beckham has been named one of two Rookies of the Year by The Sporting News.

Philadelphia Phillies left-hander J.A. Happ was the other rookie honored by the publication. The award was voted on by a panel of 338 major league players.

The 22-year-old Beckham batted .270 with 28 doubles, 14 home runs and 63 RBIs in 103 games with the White Sox in 2009. He is the ninth rookie in White Sox history to be honored by the publication, and the first since current manager Ozzie Guillen was named The Sporting News' Rookie of the Year in 1985.

The third baseman, who made his major league debut on June 4, led American League rookies in doubles, extra-base hits (43) and RBIs. Beckham, who was named AL Rookie of the Month for July, also tied for the lead in multi-hit games (28) and ranked second in home runs, runs scored (58), hits (102), on-base (.347) and slugging (.460) percentage.

Beckham's 28 doubles were the most by a White Sox rookie since Carlos Lee (32) and Chris Singleton (31) in 1999, and the most ever by a White Sox player to appear in 103 games or fewer. Beckham also ranked second on the White Sox in doubles, third in slugging percentage and fifth in RBIs.

Beckham was the White Sox's first round selection, and No. 8 overall, in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Georgia. He was the first position player from his draft class to reach the majors and fourth overall.
