White Sox Eyeing Henry Blanco
By Mark Polishuk [November 17 at 5:59pm CST]
If San Diego doesn't re-sign Henry Blanco before their exclusive negotiating window ends on Thursday, it appears as if there is at least one known suitor for the veteran catcher. According to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune, Blanco's agent Steven Schneider singled out the White Sox as one of "several teams" who have shown interest in Blanco's services.

Blanco's role in Chicago would be to back up incumbent starter A.J. Pierzynski, with Blanco providing a natural right-handed hitting counterpart to the lefty Pierzynski. The batting is secondary, however, to Blanco's defensive presence and ability to throw out runners. Blanco threw out 40 percent of all runners attempting to steal on him in 2009.

The White Sox would be the eighth team that Blanco has played for in his 12-year career, but it wouldn't be his first time in Chicago. Blanco's longest stint with any club was with the Cubs from 2005 to 2008, and Schneider told Gonzales that the catcher and his family enjoyed their time living in the Windy City

Hmmm...I think it's safe to say that the combo of Corky Miller & Ramon Castro weren't nearly as productive as Anthony John Pierzynski this past season as the White Sox backup catcher. I don't think Tyler Flowers is that Major League ready...

I was surprised the Sox didn't sign Blanco last year.

After witnessing Kenny Williams trade patterns, if the Sox sign Hank White, Flowers may be swapped.

I would wholeheartedly support this move.

Kenny is looking at that starting rotation and he is going to go for it.
He has stated that he is never going to rebuild.
I can see his thinking.....do everything to win another Pennant...and let somebody else rebuild.

Finally, a backup catcher that can throw somebody out.

I'd be very interested in him because of his defense. Put him in during the late innings of any close game.

Blanco would be here for 1 year, maybe 2. From all we know, the Sox still believe Flowers is their catcher of the future, and would probably take over for AJ after this season. Signing Blanco wouldn't seem to impact Flowers long-term future, probably his short-term.

I agree on the Blanco angle - his being here will not effect Flowers. But Flowers is an asset for Kenny and Kenny always winds up trading his young assets.

Of the starting lineup and rotation how many are homegrown?

C: FA from Giants
1B: Trade with Reds
2B: Homegrown (although many would say ready-made coming out of UGA)
SS: Cuban National Team (never played in the minors for the White Sox)
3B: Royals
LF (assuming Pods): Originally a trade from MIL, more recently a FA from COL
CF: Waiver from TOR
LF: Trade from AZ

So I'll give 1.5 for Beckham and Alexi.

Rotation:
Peavy: SD
Danks: TEX
Floyd: PHI
Buehrle: Homegrown
Garcia: FA from DET, Trade from SEA

So 1 homegrown.

So of the 13 top players in your club, you've brought 2.5 of them through your own system. Meaning, I'll be shocked if Flowers remains in the system waiting for his time to come.

Agreed that you cannot rule out that Flowers is moved this off-season. I'd be surprised though, only because AJ is a free agent after this season, and would probably want at least what he is making now, which is, I believe, $5 or $6 millio a season. Flowers seems to be on the verge of playing for the White Sox, but I'm not sure they want to waste a year of his major league status playing 2x a week for AJ. That's why signing Blanco could make some sense.

Kenny trades prospects for major league talent. So what?

I don't think signing a veteran backup catcher will impact Flowers in the least. He needs to play everyday and if he's tearing up AAA they can recall him around the all star break. This will also delay his service time and his eventual arb/free agent status.

I didn't say it's a problem he does it, I just said that based on KW's history, he's probably going to trade Flowers.

To Kenny's credit, most of the guys he has traded haven't done anything at the major league level: Sweeney, Gio, McCarthy, Chris Carter, Ring, etc.

Although I do think the talent that the Sox have drafted has improved over the last 2 years or so.

Yeah but Kenny traded for Flowers. His history is he trades players he drafted. Unless Kenny gets offered a deal he can't refuse Flowers is the catcher of the future.

Keyser, Tyler Flowers isn't ready and I saw very little from the "catcher of the future" when he was part of the September call-ups. The fact of the matter is that White Sox catchers can't throw opposing runners out, and that's a problem right now.

And you're not trading Flowers just because you sign Blanco as a backup. If anything, you keep Blanco around to back up Flowers when AJ eventually leaves.

Blanco is a solid baseball guy. He knows the game. He will hit in important clutch situations. He's solid on D, and he can spell AJ when you're facing particularly runny teams. This is a nobrainer.

The White Sox might want to look elsewhere for Anthony John Pierzynski's backup. First, the Sox decided not to offer Ramon Castro salary arbitration. Now, The SCORE's Kerry Sayers reports that Henry Blanco might be close to a deal with the New York Mets. :(
