Post subject: | Why is Jones a backup? |
According to some of our in house Sox experts, there is no doubt Jones will be a BACKUP player for the Sox in 2010? May I ask what his role will be as a backup? Pinch run? Late Inning defensive replacement? Sac Bunt? contact hitter? These are the things a 4th or 5th OF does. Some of these 'experts" named DROP IN, went as far to call it a BAD move if the guy starts? With the exception of just telling me "he will be a backup" go ahead and further explain his role on the team? |

I love being called out. I am not going to backtrack, but perhaps further explain my ramblings. First off, I am by no means a Sox expert. I'm a Cubs fan that listens to Dan Bernstein. Due to that fact, I am smarter than everyone. Actually, I do know a little bit about baseball in general. What I was poorly trying to get across in my first post, was the financial benefit of the deals. In this day and age, two players with a nice track record for a couple million is great. Think Dempster when he was injured, etc. Some of these deals go bad. These may as well. When I said backup, my point was this is not a good signing if you are planning on Jones or Vizquel to be an everyday player. At this stage in the game, not good. If it causes the team to not sign other players, it is bad. However, If Jones plays 120 games with good pitching matchups as an occasional OF, mostly DH for 1.5 mil with incentives. Great. If Kenny is planning on him being an everyday OF, it doesn't matter how cheap he was, bad. If Vizquel can be a defensive replacement, occasional starter, and mentor to bad fielding young talent, great. I do not mean like Greg Maddux being the pitching coach his last year with the Cubs. That was all bullshit. However, he did talk to many young pitchers from time to time. Maybe it was mostly about a set of tits in the crowd. But some of that was probably pitching knowledge. If he can get some of these guys to be passionate about defense, double bonus. Also, if either of these deals does not work out, I'm going to say I was dared to say they were good signings for a steak dinner. |

He is a backup outfielder. He may get significant time at DH. The same things were said when Carl Everett was brought back in 2005, and he carried that offense thru the early part of June. |

December 12 is the wave of non tendered free agency....That could be Kenny's version of "Black Friday" shopping. There is no damned guarantee that this Jones is even getting out of Spring Training...There is no 2005 blueprint to plug players into. |

The games will be played on the field in 2010, like they were in 2009 when the White Sox sucked. I am going to wait and see what players are going to be on the field.....just because Andruw Jones is signed doesn't pencil him on the team...and you can't compare him to Crazy Carl of 2005. It is a long way to April. |

i do agree with bob that "penciling in" is a dangerous thing. especially with the way the MLB is now. wait and see. |

No point in losing our minds over any of these 3 pick ups in November....let's see who gets non-tendered this month.... I just hope this year's edition of "Camp Cora" with Ramirez and Beckham in Florida is a success. |

If Andruw Jones does anything for the Chicago White Sox in 2010, he'll get the majority of his at-bats as designated hitter. |

I have not followed Jones career since he left Atlanta. I know his hitting has suffered a lot but didnt he use to be a great CF? I mean....why all of the talk about DH? Seriously. He looks a little chubby but does he now suck in the field? Just askin |

Look at it this way...when he was on steroids, he could play...now Kenny has used this guy to replace the legendary DeWayne Wise. |
