According to Scott Merkin the Chicago Whitesox have decided to stick with the DH by committee theory. I really hope you know what you are doing Ozzie. It's the end of an era on the southside, no longer will it be acceptable to clog the bases with large mashers who cannot run. Paulie we are eyeballing you my good man. I hope you did your shuttle run exercises this offseason, because you are now on the clock. Less than thirty days to go until pitchers and catchers report. Strap it down people. I really hope the pitching staff performs as well as advertised. Im still on the fence with the bullpen. If these decisions don't work out look out for more than your typical saturday fireworks!

Gosh finally. Every game I went to I was screaming to hit it to the left side because it was left wide open. Nope the guy is Babe Ruth has to swing from his heels. Home run or strike out. Then can't run from first to third on a hit. One base at a time.
From all accounts nice guy, but I want to win. Plus he didn't do that well in L.A.

They still need a power hitter in the middle of that lineup, it's a bit of a letdown to have a starting rotation that looks as good as it does on paper only to have an offense that may struggle to score, but I'm not sure that Thome was the answer. I'm sure he'd hit the occasional HR, but I also think he'd hit around .240ish.

I promise you that they will be looking for a left handed power hitter at the trade deadline.

Due is better than Uno.

Thome is officially now a Twin

Quote:
Thome agrees to 1-year, $1.5M deal

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jim Thome has hit 57 of his 564 career home runs against the Minnesota Twins.

Now it's time to even it out a little.

Thome and the Twins agreed Tuesday on a one-year, $1.5 million contract, allowing the 39-year-old slugger to return to the division he knows well and play for a contender with his time in baseball winding down.

Thome's deal includes about $750,000 in incentives, according to the Pioneer Press of St. Paul, Minn.

The Twins will have two really good left-handed designated hitters with Jim Thome joining Jason Kubel in Minnesota. In terms of OPS, Thome and Kubel had two of the highest among DHs last season. Here's that list:

OPS
Adam Lind .901
Jim Thome .879
Hideki Matsui .866
Luke Scott .845
Jason Kubel .838
*Minimum .150 PA

Even though he'll be more of a bench player than the middle-of-the-lineup-force he's been for 19 seasons, Thome was eager to join one of his longtime rivals.

"They were really excited about me coming there, so to me it was a no-brainer," Thome said on a conference call with local reporters. "I've always enjoyed the way they play and how they go about their business. To be a part of that will be a lot of fun to go there and help them win."

Jason Kubel is coming off a career-best season as the regular designated hitter, and the Twins are committed to Delmon Young as their left fielder. Justin Morneau is entrenched at first base.

So Thome will be used primarily as a pinch-hitter and a part-time DH, when Kubel needs a break or plays in the field. Kubel can move to right field, too, when Michael Cuddyer gets a day off or fills in at first for Morneau. Manager Ron Gardenhire didn't rule out occasional starts at first for Thome, either.

"We play 'em all. Everybody's going to get at-bats," Gardenhire said.

The deal is pending a physical exam.

Thome has fought back problems throughout his career, and his production has dipped in recent years after hitting 42 homers with 109 RBIs for the Chicago White Sox in 2006. Still, he'll be remembered as one of the best sluggers of his generation, and one of the few who wasn't found guilty of steroid use.

"We just signed a guy that's going to be in the Hall of Fame, and it doesn't get much better than that," Gardenhire said. "He's going to let it fly, and if he hits it it's going to hurt somebody."

Thome played for the Cleveland Indians for his first 12 years, topping out at 52 homers in 2002 before spending three seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies. He then came to the White Sox, who traded him to the Dodgers on Aug. 31. He saw limited action in Los Angeles.

Thome was interested in returning to Chicago, and also considering an offer from the Tampa Bay Rays, but White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen recently told Thome he wouldn't get enough at-bats to justify a return.

Gardenhire's sales pitch was what pushed him to Minnesota.

"Is my ability what it was at, say, 25 or 30 years old? Probably not, but I like to compete. I like to go out and play the game hard," Thome said. "That's why this is a great fit."

Thome's career batting average is .277. The five-time All-Star only had a total of 362 at-bats last year.

"I don't expect him to come off the bench and be a .400 hitter. I expect him to come off the bench and be a threat," Gardenhire said. "He looks like stinkin' Babe Ruth. He swings like Babe Ruth. We've seen too many fly against us. Now let's see some fly for us."

Im wondering if there are any studies available on DH by committee vs. traditional 1 DH. I would like the flexibility I think. But my favorite team plays in the shitty league that doesnt have the DH

Unless Andruw Jones hits 20 HR and Mark Kotsay hits .290 in splitting that role up, you are correct.

It's a shame that the White Sox are potentially going to waste a very good pitching staff with such an ordinary lineup.

25+ HRs out of the DH position should be easily attainable for the Sox.

I like Thome, but station to station, .240 avg, and all those strikeouts don't really do a ton of good in the #4 spot of the lineup.

What's lost in the committee idea is consistency. I'm all for it as long as it's not a rotating bench role (which it might be once the injury bug bites). Seeing regular at bats is most important.

Spiegel read a stat earlier that said only the Red Sox (David Ortiz) and White Sox (Carl Everett) made the World Series using one guy as a DH in 100+ games since 2000.

That's an interesting but misleading 'stat.'

Before DePaul's latest loss to #9 West Virginia at Allstate Arena, The SCORE's Brian "The Whipping Boy" Paruch brought up a very valid point when he & Matt "The Dancing Fool" Rodewald pinch hit for Laurence Holmes last night on the White Sox flagship. "Whip" said that Thome might not get as many at-bats even as a Minnesota Twin this upcoming season. Despite a very short porch to right field in the Twins' new Target Field, "Whip" reminded listeners about the Twins' outfield alignment & that Jason Kubel is still the Designated Hitter the majority of the time. That said, I'm not sure Thome is long for that franchise and that may be his last stop in Bud Selig's Major League Baseball.

It's misleading because it implies if you rely too much on one DH, you won't make the World Series.

Bingo. It's also misleading because 100 games is a totally arbitrary cut-off point. Torii Hunter won a Gold Glove a few years back and he only played 96 games.

Except that people vote on gold glove winners. Last I checked, the AL pennant was not determined by a group of sportswriters and players casting a ballot.

The only thing that little "stat" says is that you do not need a full time DH to be successful. The Yankees, Angels, Tigers, and Rays all had a DH by comittee, more or less.

All it implies is that there is more than 1 way to skin a cat.

It is saying only 2 out of 9 times something happened. That is implying more than just you can do something one way and do something another way (and it disguises the fact that it really happened 3 out of 9 times.) It's also trying to draw some relationship between DH playing time and winning the AL pennant without providing any supporting evidence. It's just dumb talk. It's the equivalent of saying that since 2000, three National League teams made the World Series without a player having a last name starting with N. It may be interesting, but the two have nothing to do with each other.

This time I think it is true. Without J.D and Thome this team has a faster more versatile lineup. Konerko is still a piano pulled, but at least that's just one and not three. I don't know if the changes will pan out. I guess we will have to wait and see. After all that's the fun part right?

Geezus, it's an old DH who wasn't re-signed. Check back, and i doubt by the end of the year, Thome has more than 12 HR in limited ABs. If this guy is stealing plate appearances from Kubel, Young, or Cuddyer it's because aforementioned are hurt or aren't performing.

I think he's a great guy to have in the clubhouse, but Ozzie wants to try a different kind of lineup. I'm not going to say it will necessarily work, but this is potentially the best rotation at 35th and Sheilds since '84. Will the lineup work? Let's look at this again in August.
