For a backup SS?

Seems stupid to me.

They both play SS and they are both from Venezuela. They will also both be in the HOF. I'm sure that had a lot to do with it

I have never understood why you unretire a number for a current player. Once a number is retired, it should never be worn again unless the person comes back to play again or comes back from the dead to suit up.

Aparicio hasn't gone for a dirtnap yet. I understand that point..I also think it was pretty stupid to reture #3 when Baines was still playing. But, maybe this had something to do with it:

Aparicio has said Vizquel is the one player he'd like to see don his number.

I'll never understand for the life of me why Harold Baines' #3 was retired to begin with. That was so stupid! As for the White Sox and the #11 that Omar Vizquel will now wear, even though it was retired for Luis Aparicio, I think Aparicio's family must have given Vizquel the green light. Unfortunately, a certain Sox World Series manager wears the number that Omar had worn dating back to when he was in Cleveland starting out...You may have heard of him, Ozzie Guillen...

Really SHARK? Retiring the number of one of the franchise's most prolific hitters is stupid? There are really only a handful of Sox players you could say were better than Baines: Frank Thomas, Joe Jackson, old aches and paines, and Fisk.

Baines was still active when the Sox retired #3, Frank...That's the part that's stupid...

#11 is the Bret Favre of White Sox jersey numbers.

I always thought they should have retired Floyd Robinsons' #3

I'm sure the Yankees would unretire the number 7 if they really wanted to sign So Taguchi and he asked them nicely.

What was wrong with Omar Vizquel sporting #17 on his White Sox uniform as was originally listed on whitesox.com right after SoxFest? There are 3 Sox players that might not be on the big club when it breaks camp from Glendale, AZ. Vizquel should take these potential available numbers if one, two or all three of these guys are cut in Spring Training:
#5 Jayson Nix
#18 Brent Lillibridge
#24 Dayan Viciedo

You tell em SHARK, no one should wear #11 for the White Sox again and no one should wear #18 for the Bears again.

I'll never understand for the life of me why the #18 was retired in Denver for Frank Tripucka and why Kyle Orton now sports #8 for the Broncos...#18 on the Bears is still good, RFDC, but #11 on the Sox is RETIRED and should stay that way.

This retired number stuff is bullshit.

Hell, there are people on this board who never saw Walter Payton play a down, let alone Luis Aparicio.
The Cubs retire a number of a guy who achieved his greatest success as a member of the Braves.

Seems to me if you do not retire numbers, the stars who wore those numbers will be remembered and talked about on the air and in print more often than they are now.

Teams can always display the player image and number on the wall, on a flag or on a rafters banner...and the number can be reissued....GIVE #11 OR #2 TO GORDON BECKHAM....Give the numbers of the retired superstars to players of promise...not just any Hooterville Stiff of the moment.

Make the number something for a player to live up to or emulate the star player who wore it once...

The only fans these retired numbers mean anything to are the fans who actually saw these guys play...Some 25 year old kid having a beer in the U.S. Cellular Field bleachers doesn't give a rat's ass about Harold Baines, let alone Minnie Minoso.

Gordon Beckham's #15 was a hot seller, even before Alex Rios joined the White Sox last August. Rios decided to flip the number to #51 when he arrived on the South side. As for Omar Vizquel, here's another bright idea from your SHARK...If he can't wear #13 like he's worn for other teams in his career, why not flip the number around and sport #31 on the Sox silver & black uniform this season? Just a thought...

Maybe somebody can wear 99 to "Honor" ALMIGHTY Minnie Minoso?
