I just looked at Damon's stats for last year. I had no idea his power numbers balooned so much. They were way above what he has normally averaged over the course of his career. But at 36 do you think that will continue?

Yankees stadium is a major hitters park, so is the Cell.

This would be a great pickup. He would fit in perfectly with the damn DH by committe thing and actually produce. Plus he is a known figure, we have no idea how Jones is going to do, same goes for Kotsay.

Side Fact about Damon: He had a breakout year playing for the Rockford Royals.

Damon: .282/24 HR/82 RBI/.365 OBP/12 SB/0 CS/.854 OPS
Pansy: .304/7 HR/48 RBI/.353 OBP/30 SB/13 CS/.765 OPS

For a one or two year deal, I think he will continue to get similar to those numbers. Will Pansy stay healthy for more than 75% of the games? His career says no, but last year, at 33, he did.

I think he would be a perfect fixture in the #2 spot, allowing Bacon to move down the order for some RBI opportunities.

I don't like the idea of The Franchise, taking pitches and grounding the ball to the right side to move along runners in the 2 hole. He needs to be able to swing the stick.

5:50pm: According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago's interest in Johnny Damon is more about "due diligence" than anything else, and if the price tag is around $7MM per season, that is beyond their budget.


I'd rather see them sign hank blalock who can rotate between 1st and dh, and c wang to add depth as another pitcher just in case sweety freedy can't hold down that the 5th spot.....

I cannot see how the Tigers are a major player in this. They have been moving young and cheap all winter and suddenly they are going to make a play for Damon? They have expiring contracts next year and some young guys that are at the point where they need to play on the MLB level. They have bad OF/DH types already in place. It seems that the Tigers would be the sham bidder Boras likes to throw into negotiations.

It has also been reported that the Braves are out.

I have a sneaking suspicion Damon is going to be a Sox by the end of the weekend and that Boras is simply trying to drive up the price in his customary manner. However, the Sox are stonewalling him.

I would be happy if this happened.

I don't think the Tigers have cut as much salary as some think - they have cut back some, but they are still 100 million plus (I think), but I do agree that this 2 year/14 million being talked about seems a bit much after all the talk about him signing a 1 year deal at $4 million. That could be Boras running with a phantom deal to try and get the Tigers or White Sox to bid more than they originally were going to.

Why would Detroit let Polanco walk away, trade Granderson and Jackson then sign Velverde for 2yr/$14M and offer Damon a 2yr/$14 contract?? Granderson will make $5.5M and Jackson $5M this year. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

According to FOXSports.com, the Tigers and free agent outfielder Johnny Damon have exchanged proposals and aren't far from an agreement.

Rosenthal takes back his previous tweet, and says that the White Sox did not make Damon a second offer. Their original offer still stands, though it is not believed to be as high as Detroit's.

Rosenthal adds that Damon and his wife "would prefer him to play in a more cosmopolitan city than Detroit," for what it's worth.

"Johnny Damon to the White Sox? The idea certainly is not dead. The question is how alive it might be.

Damon played golf Monday with White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski and broadcaster Ken “Hawk” Harrelson, according to major-league sources.

Pierzynski lobbied Damon to sign with the White Sox, and Damon’s wife, Michelle, would prefer him to play in a more cosmopolitan city than Detroit, multiple sources say.

But whether Damon will sign with the White Sox remains in question.

The White Sox have not budged from their original offer to Damon, according to a high-ranking team official.

That offer is not thought to be competitive with the Tigers’ reported proposals to Damon — one year, $7 million or two years, $14 million.

Some with the White Sox, however, are confident that a deal with Damon could happen, and believe it might even be close.

Clearly, the White Sox are discussing Damon at length internally and remain in contact with the player’s agent, Scott Boras.

Considering that Damon's OPS vs Tiger pitching AWAY from Comerica Park is below .800 (vs .961 @ Comerica)....
apparently Tiger pitching can keep Damon in check in places like Fenway (LH hitters paradise) but not in their considered not to be hitter friendly home park.
