Chicago Tribune wrote: Multiple sources tell the Tribune that during a Monday morning news conference, the Cubs and White Sox will announce a new tradition -- a trophy (and the public bragging rights) to the club which wins the annual city series between them. We're told a tiebreaker is in place should the teams split the six games 3-3. While the teams surely have more questions to answer, we thought we'd give them some ideas on the kind of trophy they might want to play for. Is this truly necessary? All it does is entice the meatballs to be more meatbally than usual. |

Its a terribly dumb idea. 6 games of this BS is too many anyway. 1 series per year, and alernate it between Wrigley the Cell. Though, the one texter to M&H this morning who suggested that the award should be 'Bill Veeck's Pegleg' was hilarious |

Isn't it good enough to know that if your team wins that you are physically and intellectually superior to the losers that root for the other team? |

They should leave this crap to the college towns to fight over the Golden Keg or what the hell ever other trophies football teams play for. |

In college, it gives a team bragging rights, but they are professional. It's about as stupid as using the all star game as the basis for the home field. |

I would like to see the Sox really follow through with this thing. Perhaps a monument outside the park for each time they win the trophy? Maybe they can go retroactive and erect a monument for each time they have won the season series in the past. I have always felt that there needs to be something to remind fans of the greatness of Mike Caruso and Greg Norton. If they run out of space for all the monuments, perhaps they can remove that crazy black granite one from behind home plate entrance to make room for more. |

This is stupid. This is a result of a Ricketts/Reinsdorf money grab. This is not just some trophy, it's the BP somethingorother Trophy, meaning, the Cubs and Sox will make money doing nothing but passing a stupid piece of hardware back and forth. Sometimes I hate unbridled capitalism. |

It is a dumb idea for all the reasons mentioned. Curious as to what this tie-breaker criteria is in the event of a 3-3 split. Seriously, what fan would say "Woohoo! We OWN the trophy thanks to that made-up tie breaker!! The other team SUCKS!!" |

And it's still ridiculous. |

They should make it worth something more than a trophy--maybe the winning team gets an extra home game in the series the next season. |

So one team wins the dumb trophy but the loser makes the playoffs? The trophy winner wins 70 games and stays home in October. How stupid. And yes- Interleague play sucks. Unless your division mates play the same opponents. The Cubs get the Sox six times a year. The Cards get the Royals six times. I hate the Cubs but that is not fair to them. Its like that all over the league. |

Post subject: | Re: Good idea or bad idea? |
This BP Cup is a dumb idea, but one that will involve commercial dollars to be earned by both teams and thats always going to motivate some teams. But moreover, I want to defend Interleague play for two reasons. One-You get to see more players at your teams ballpark because of it. I remember when it started, I was excited about seeing Alex Rodriguez and ken Griffey Jr., play at Wrigley Field. Sure, I could have seen them play at the Sox ballpark, but it's not the same and think of all the cities that don't have 2 teams. This way, they can see a lot more of the great players. For that reason, I like it. Plus,(2) it gives me reason to go to see other ballparks that I otherwise might never go see, because the Cubs are playing in their park. For sox fans, it might lead you to go see a great N.L park, that you otherwise might never have bothered to go see. |

I agree. I do like interleague play. I just don't like this bullshit about having 6 games between the natural rivals. As I understand it, Reinsdorf was the driving force behind this. The cheap bastard will do anything to ensure 3 more sellouts each year. |

I can't believe the outcry over this. How is this a bad idea? I can understand if you don't care one way or the other, but what possible negative can come out of this? I don't have a problem with it. I love the crosstown classic and don't see a problem with having a little trophy to commemorate it and let everyone know year to year who has bragging rights. Obviously in the grand scheme of things the trophy doesn't mean much, but it doesn't hurt anyone and can add a little flavor to the rivalry. Nothing wrong with that. |
