Yeah, but hoped his arm would hold together for a couple years.

It was probably his Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL).

If it is the UCL, it takes 7 months to heal after surgery. Says here that some may never be the same after tearing it. :(

Wait!!! It says on that above web site that some pitchers have increased velocity after the UCL fully healed. Surgery has been perfected and if done correcly he could be fine. One year to get back and 2 years to be better than before.

"Approximately 75-85 percent of athletes return to their previous level of competition following reconstruction of the UCL. Some baseball pitchers even report increased velocity after surgery. The average rehabilitation time for throwing athletes is about 1 year, but it may take up to 24 months for a patient to return to their previous ability level."

All he has to do is the "towel drill" and throw a couple dozen simulated games and he'll be good as.....?????

I was at a bar watching the game but they had MLB channel volume on (TB vs Bos). Harold Reynolds said it looked like a stinger. Something tells me it's a little more serious than that.

Yeah, if you read that first article I posted a torn UCL comes from bad mechanics by a pitcher. We all know Peavy throws across his body with violent whip action and recoil. He puts tremendous torque on that ligament. It wasn't that one pitch that did it. It was weakening all a long and that pitch was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

Good thing he didn't get to the Cubs. Hendry would have already extended him with a full no trade.

They are saying he strained something in his shoulder or back. Hopefully it's just a strain and not a tear.

Strained right latissimus dorso per Hawk. Glad its not his shoulder. This might give it a much needed rest for the stretch run anyways. Bring up Hudson and you're ok for a couple weeks.

Yeah. I thought Stone said it was in his arm. They gave the name of the muscle that he strained, but I've never heard of it. Anyway, that's good. A strained muscle can heal in a couple of weeks or a month. He's gonna be fine!!!! He'll be back this year!!!! Woo hoo!!!

They just showed the muscle that he strained. It's his side muscle right below his arm pit.

Maybe this is a blessing in disguise. He gets to rest his arm for a while and maybe prevent that from going this year. We can survive a month without him.

That was a nice picture they just put up. He has a strained arm pit. I'm pretty sure they don't perform Tommy John surgery for that.

Regardless, Cooper will be on tomorrow denying an injury of any type. "I, I, I, I, don't know where you guys get this stuff. It's all just negative talk. He's fine. He just needs to throw more first pitch strikes."

if its a strain all is good, sit him down for a month, he would miss 3 to 4 four starts depending on the schedule plus 3 days off for all-star break, cowley reporting the MRI is taking place this morning

Dr. Beardown.....seriously?

The Sox could go with 4 men until the All Star break, resulting in one missed start, keep it going right after for a second missed start and bring him back for Saturday July 24. That's 18 days off, with putting very little strain on the rest of the staff.

Anyone else happen to notice how well Hudson is doing in AAA? I have full confidence the Sox will not miss a beat even with this injury.

Umm, don't they have to wait for the MRI results to know if a ligament has been torn or not?

I've noticed. Have you also noticed how well Jeff Marquez is pitching??

The best case scenario for Peavy is it's only a strain and with the all star break and off days he will only miss 2 starts. Hudson will pitch sunday the 11th vs KC and monday the 19th at Sea. Peavy could return sunday the 25th @ Oak on 19 days rest.

I'd rather Peavy miss 3 or 4 starts if necessary to get back to 100% rather than come back too early. Hudson had some decent outings last year for the Sox and he should be ok as a 5th starter.

Torres as well.

I think they could push him back even further with the day off on the 22nd and the days off at the all star break. Still, I think I'd rather just call up Hudson and maybe squeeze another start or two from him even after Peavey gets back. I would like to see Buehrle get a 6 day rest between starts once in a while during the second half.

Out of the All Star break, I assume the pitching sets up as Buehrle, Floyd, Danks and Freddy against Minnesota. That would give Hudson starts against KC (on a getaway day before the break) and Seattle with Oakland a possibility as well. That is a nice group for him to get his feet wet against.

Yeah. That's what I was saying. They can survive without him for a month. Sorry for saying he had a torn UCL. I was just guessing on the fly.

Pena pitched a few innings yesterday so he can't be used for a couple of days. You can actually start Pena the last Sunday before the all star break if you want. That would have been Peavy's next start. He can go 4 or 5 innings and the bullpen can take over. Or they can call up Hudson for that start if they want.

Hawk mentioned how well Hudson has been pitching on yesterday's broadcast.
