It's no secret that WSCR 670 The SCORE's contract as the flagship of the Chicago White Sox Radio Network expires at the end of the current baseball season. However, if what Crain's Chicago Business reporter Ed Sherman wrote today in his blog at chicagobusiness.com is accurate, you can forget about the Sox moving their broadcasts off their radio home since 2006.

After considering possibly moving their broadcasts to a proposed FM sports talker co-owned by White Sox/Bulls' Owner/Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and Emmis Communications' boss Jeff Smulyan, a former owner of the Seattle Mariners in the '90s, Sherman's sources say that 670 The SCORE is very close to a multi-year extension to continue as the White Sox flagship beyond this season. Terms aren't disclosed, but it's believed that Ed Farmer & Darrin Jackson would remain as the team's radio voices.

Despite other teams such as the Washington Redskins, St. Louis Cardinals & Los Angeles Angels owning the stations that also air their games & the migration of sports talk on FM in other major markets such as Philadelphia & Boston, there are drawbacks that'll likely keep the Sox where they're at. For starters, industry experts aren't so sure that enough listeners & advertising support would make a third sports talk station work here. Also, there's not nearly a strong enough reach considering the Sox already play on a 50,000-watt sports talker that can be heard in some 38 states & Canada on a clear night in WSCR.
