Trader Kenny always seems to come up with something about the deadline. If you're Kenny, what are your priorities right now?

- Set up man?
- More bench bats?
- backup catcher? (I;ve seen people complain about Widger all the time)
- Center fielder?

KW's m.o. is to make a trade well before the deadline in order to get a player before a market develops.

Centerfield?- Anderson finally cleared the .200 mark and has been doing well for the better part of a month.

Bench bat? I suppose Mackowiak and Ozuna hitting over .300 and Cintron hovering near that level are not enough.

I can see getting a backup catcher. It might come in handy during the regular season but zero impact in the playoffs.

If a righthanded reliever was available in exchange for no more than Owens, I would be all for it.

Bullpen help, definitely. But, as TB as noted, anyone with good bullpen guys are more than likely going to be one of the zillions of teams that believe they're still in it, so they're going to be tough to come by. And with Atlanta surging, I'd be suprised if Scheurholtz moved Smoltz, given what a suckfest the NL is.

I'd LIKE to be able to nab Howry from the Cub, but Hendry in his infinite wisdom said that he's not going to trade anyone.

Not only that, but KW yesterday on the North show specifically stated that he "will never deal with the Cubs". Seems to be more of an issue with someone other than William's and Hendry since KW also stated that he and "Jim" get along quite well.

Williams should do whatever possible within reason to prevent the Red Sox or Yankees from acquiring a top-of-the-rotation starter. A Willis or Schmidt for example. Other than that, I'd probably stand pat. I believe when all is said and done that their bullpen will be a strength. Cotts, Thornton, and Jenks is a pretty damned good trio and Riske is at least an average middle reliever, imo.

A middle reliever that doesn't give me heartburn.

At least uncle Cliffie is finally gone.

I said early this year that Thorton would be the Closer by the end of this year.

Barring injury, that won't happen since Jenks has been so solid. I can see Ozzie using him more and more in tight situations as we get down to the nitty-gritty. I really think that Williams can stand pat.

Nah. Dolphin drinks his beer out of a can. Totally different cat.

By the way, Mac Murph, this has been said plenty of times outside of Bernstein, especially considering the Sox won the title last year. Every national asswipe & his brother have jumped on the "gotta love 'Kenny the Gambler'" routine. I've heard the guys on Baseball Tonight say the same stuff. "Kenny doesn't make his moves on the eve of the deadline. Kenny likes to strike early." Etc, etc. It's a bit blown out of proportion in my opinion. He got Garcia early, but Contreras was picked up right before the clock struck midnight, and the rest of Kenny's big moves took place in the offseason. More of a myth/legend that's developing since they won the trophy. Had they lost to Boston in rd 1, I don't think you'd be hearing the "this is Kenny's style" argument.

Roberto Alomar (cough) and Carl (I don't believe in dinosaurs) Everett would be a couple of other exceptions along with Contreras, I guess, but neither would fall under the "blockbuster" category.

If you are going to argue with yourself Spinnin you should at least use your mult.

I don't know about your point. I think he regularly jumps on trades before a team is able to develop a market for a player. This usually leads to him overpaying, but he does seem to get his man.

That wasn't arguing smartass, was just adding something. By the way:

Jim Thome
AJ Pierzynski
Tadahito Iguchi
Jermaine Dye
Scott Podsednik
Rob Mackowiak
Alex Cintron
Javier Vazquez

all done in the offseason.

only Freddy Garcia and Jose Contreras were significant mid-season acquisitions, and Jose was picked up at the last minute. so basically Freddy is the only guy that fits the mold, and that's why I say Kenny's rep is a bit blown out of proportion. Good GM, but the track record doesn't really fit the tag line on the business card.

My point isn't about in v. out of season. My point is that he jumps on trades before markets develop. He jumped on Thome this year before the Phillies shopped him around, even though the entire league knew he would be traded. If the league knew Vazquez was available there certainly would have been more suitors. David Wells was the same type of acquistion.

Well, I guess Kenny is shopping for a backup catcher.

And found one in Sandy Alomar Jr. AGAIN. Decent upgrade and good leadership. I like the move. Thanks for 2005 Widger.

What's the E.T.A. for Carl Everett and Roberto Alomar?

Holmes also told us that Garland is the White Sox best pitcher over the past 6 weeks...

What's next, that Mark Buerhle isn't pitching well ?
