Cardinals, White Sox Talking Colby Rasmus
By Luke Adams [July 24 at 10:56am CST]
Despite publicly insisting they don't intend to trade Colby Rasmus, the Cardinals have engaged in discussions with the White Sox involving the outfielder, reports Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Strauss says talks between the two teams have "accelerated" within the last few days.

According to Strauss, Edwin Jackson and Matt Thornton are among the players who could interest the Cardinals. The Cards would also be looking for minor league talent from the White Sox, and a third team "may be sought to facilitate a deal."

The Nationals and Rays also remain interested in Rasmus, who has seen a recent decline in his playing time as Jon Jay has taken over as St. Louis's primary center fielder.

Edwin Jackson or Matt Thornton for Colby Rasmus, fine. Jackson and Thornton for Rasmus, too much.

I don't want to see Jackson or Thornton traded. The rotation and the bullpen have been the strenghts of this team and I don't think they should take away from a strength to improve a weakness.

I agree completely. I have watched Rasmus a lot in the last couple years and I do not think he is worth it.

So they should take away from a weakness? I don't get it?

Really?

Dont think the La Russa saga has held him back?

I kinda expect him to break out in his next stop, no matter where it is

Jackson won't be resigning here after this year. If he can secure a potential solid CF in Rasmus, I'm all for it.

Remember, he was a .276 hitter last year, with a .839 OPS and double digit steals.

They need to keep the pitching staff intact. Use position players or minor leaguers to upgrade the offense. What's not to 'get' about that??

He is a really talented kid that could be alot better than he is right now. Character concerns appear to be part of the deal too.

There were some enhancement whispers and he has a meddling father who thinks he is his personal hitting coach.

The pitching staff has a glut of starters.
If you are going to trade because you need a position player, why would you think you have extra position players to trade, especially position players who are wanted by the other team. Rasmus for Rios isn't going to happen.
The minor leagues, with the exception of Viciedo, is pretty much deplted, isn't it?
You deal from your strengths.
What's not to "get" about that?

There is a reason why every team in baseball is looking for pitching. Having a 'glut' of starting pitching is a good thing and if the Sox win the division they want Edwin Jackson starting a playoff game. Dealing a starting pitcher or a bullpen arm would hurt the team.

The minor leagues is far from depleted.

I really respect your baseball knowledge, Keyser, we just disagree on this.
You can't get rid of the guys hurting your team: Dunn and Rios.
That said, the only way to help the team without hurting it is by trading minor leaguers.
I really don't think the minors have nearly as much talent as they did a couple of years ago.

I don't like the trade rumor as currently structured. First, while he's earning closer money, Matt Thornton's a lot more comfortable in the setup role to current closer Sergio Santos. Second, considering the fact Jake Peavy is one more bad injury away from cutting his career short, if they dealt Herb Lawrence's buddy Edwin "Der Kommissar" Jackson, the White Sox might end up losing 2 starting pitchers if they made this deal.

As for Colby Rasmus, where does he play? You can't get a 24 pack of Pepsi Max for Alex Rios and despite the fact he's been terrible this season, Rios appears to be firmly entrenched in center field for the forseeable future and has a big contract to boot. Unless the Sox want to eat the bulk of Rios' contract, that's not happening. Also, whether Ozzie likes it or not, it's only a matter of time before Dayan Viciedo takes over right field for Carlos Quentin. Rasmus may not care for Cardinals' manager Tony LaRussa, but I don't see this deal coming to fruition.

You mean to win this season? This team isn't winning shit the way it's currently constructed. May as well make the move for the future. It might help now too.

I really don't think the minors have nearly as much talent as they did a couple of years ago.

They may not have that monster stud prospect that is needed at the front of a deal to acquire a top player like Felix Hernandez or Tulo but they have more than enough to get the type of players that are currently being discussed. If they can't matchup then move on to the next deal because they don't need some big blockbuster-type deal, they just need some fine-tuning.

MONDAY: White Sox GM Kenny Williams told Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune that the report was not entirely accurate. "That, as reported, is incorrect," Williams said, without denying its validity outright (Twitter link).
