Incident with Nolan RyanIn an enduring image from 1993, Ventura was hit by a pitch in the right elbow by pitcher Nolan Ryan, the hardthrowing Texas Rangers legend. Ventura charged the mound, and Ryan seized him in a headlock with his left arm and landed six blows to the head and face of the younger player before Rangers catcher Iván Rodríguez separated the two players. Ventura and White Sox manager Gene Lamont were then ejected from the game. Ventura was suspended for two games and criticized by commentators. He would be booed in Texas for the remainder of his career. Video of the incident is still shown before every home game at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and is invariably cheered. Ryan and Ventura have since made up and have even done appearances and card shows together, signing pictures of their famous tangle |

I don't think anybody outside of Jerry and Kenny knew Ventura was even an option for this. Kenny is the bigger problem with the last couple seasons anyway. |

I never heard any Sox fans longing for Ventura to be the team's manager. My guess is that the vast majority of Sox fans will regard this as a meatball hire. The potential upside of this selection is that Ventura will perform so poorly that Kenny will be held responsible and thus his exodus from the organization will be hastened. |

There were 2 names I kept hearing. One of them was Dave Martinez, the Rays' bench coach perceived as the front runner. is this akin to the Quade selection in that they know they're probably not going to be too good the next few years so they figure might as well select a sacrificial lamb who at least will generate some buzz amongst the meatballs and sell a few tickets? |
