Mark Gonzalez wrote today that the D'Bags put a claim in for Konerko and the Sox asked for power hitting first baseman Paul Goldschmidt (6'3" 245) in return. The talks never reached the point where the Sox asked Konerko to waive his no trade clause. Goldschmidt (24) is a monster power hitter who bashed 30 home runs in 103 games at double A (.306/.435/.626/1.061) and another 8 bombs in 48 games for the D'Bags (.250/.333/.474/.808). He cut his strikeout rate from 2010 but they are still a concern. Goldschmidt is an average 1B with decent mobility and good hands. I obviously don't want to see Konerko traded but I'm pretty sure one way or another this trade will be revisited this off season. |

With the way Goldschmidt has played I don't see why the Dbacks would be interested in trading him for Konerko. Konerko is on the downhill side, why give up one of your good prospects for him? |

It's reasonable to think the Sox at the trading deadline might have already decided to rebuild this coming winter. Getting rid of a big contract while getting a decent prospect in return would seem to be a sensible thing to do in that scenario. However, you are correct to conclude that it would make no sense to give up a HIGH level prospect that is making little money, in return for an aging player making a lot. |

if Cowley wrote it, it would be a lie. Not even close to surprised they put Paulie on Waivers, but no way they are giving the Sox Goldschmidt. I even question them asking for him? Are you going to win with Paulie next year? Let him go to AZ and save the money. |

It would make a lot of sense if they were to have let him go for a decent prospect, if they are (as I suspect) going into a rebuilding phase. They would save a lot of money on Paulies salary. The problem would be the fan reaction to such a move. It would be a CLEAR signal that they are rebuilding and not expecting to contend anytime soon. That would most definitely affect ticket sales adversely, so whatever money they saved on Konerko's salary, might well be lost to decreased ticket sales/concessions/parking. |

Going to say Goldschmidt was much more than a DECENT PROSPECT 30 and 35 HR's the last 2 years in the minors. No way a team in financial woes, has a 22 year old 1B of the future ready to go, trade him for Konerko this year. |

I don't believe for a second that the D-Backs considered trading the high level prospect that Goldschmidt represents to their organization. I think the Sox might have been well advised to make the deal for JUST a decent prospect and not a top level one, just to be rid of the big contract....if they are dead set on rebuilding. For Arizona to even claim Konerko was questionable. If the Sox did what Toronto did with Alex Rios and said "okay, he's yours" when the claim was made, they assume the contract. Although based on konerko's last 2 seasons, they probably could have turned around and dealt him in the winter anyway. But if they are gonna rebuild, they need to dump vets with value (Konerko, Quentin, A.J.) as well as those approaching free agency, ( Floyd, Danks)that they don't anticipate being able/wanting to retain, in exchange for good young prospects they can build with. |

It always makes me laugh when Cub fans question a teams desire to win now. |

I don't even think Kenny makes that move if he is the Dbacks. |

In recent years he has made just those kinds of moves in adding guys like Peavy and Jackson and trading away young promising talent ( Daniel Hudson, Clayton Richard) for older veterans making much more money....not the direction I see them going with anymore in the near future though. I am amazed Kenny was able to retain his job. |
