The White Sox are out of guns, butter, bullets and brains.

He only said that to make his hiring of Ventura look less stupid!

There is no way this could possibly be true. That is crazy talk.

I'll say one thing about Kenny, at least he is honest. It takes a lot of balls to admit you were actually considering doing something so absurd.

There have been plenty of successful player-managers. It's not like it was some idiotic concept like a "College of Coaches".

The last player/manager in Major League Baseball, if memory serves, was Pete Rose in Cincinnati before he committed one of the sport's cardinal sins in betting on the game. I'm old enough to remember back in the late '70s, the White Sox did have a player/manager in Don Kessinger. I don't think he did all that well in his brief stint doing double duty.

It was plenty stupid.

So when its time to pull the starting pitcher he would walk over from first base, take the ball and signal down to the pen?

C'mon Orr. I bleed White Sox baseball as well, but this is moronic. Its not 1920 anymore.

Posted in the Ventura mistake thread as well;

Quote:
"That report is not false," Williams said Tuesday after Ventura was formally announced.

"It was considered long enough for me to realize that Paul is a very cerebral person and he would probably drive himself nuts right now playing and managing at the same time," Williams said when asked how seriously he considered Konerko.

"But that’s the kind of respect I have for him that, yeah, I did consider it. Then I thought I think I would rather him be focused more on hitting third or fourth in the lineup and driving in 100 runs rather than trying to worry about 25 other guys in addition to it. We are trying to win."

Mercy

I just don't find it so strange or outlandish. Joe Torre was a player-manager. Frank Robinson was a player-manager. It's certainly not some groundbreaking thing. Frankly, I don't think the manager matters much at all. I have no doubt that Paulie can fill out a lineup card as well as Ventura.

Who is going to play 1st when he gets tossed arguing a Joe West balk call?

Is that really a concern? I don't think it's a good practice for a manager to get tossed. And if it is, then obviously the manager doesn't matter too much, right?

Typical Sox fan response

The college of Coaches was not an idiotic concept. Unless you dismiss the value of specialized coaching

Yeah, nutz to think they'd skip over AJ for Konerko as player-manager.

Too bad that Eddie Feigner from the King and His Court softball team passed away in 2007.
They could have hired him to manage and pitch.
He was the only pitcher on the team and only played with three guys in the field.
Think of the money the Sox could have saved with an operation like this!

The White Sox are leaning toward using the short bus for transportation.

It would have been better to hire Buhrle as a manager and occasional pitcher but only pay him as a manager. Brilliance!

I know the '48 Indians won a World Series with a player-manager. I just can't see what's so absurd about it. It's not like he was thinking of firing Tony LaRussa and putting Carlton Fisk in leftfield.

i agree, i wish kenny would have kept that idea to himself...but it does take alot of balls to say that publicly

Post subject:  Re: Kenny considered Pauly as player-manager

Why stop there? Since Konerko has some free time now not having to manage, why not mic him up every game, and name him player/play-by-play-guy?

"Outfield bunched, infield at double play depth, I'm holding the runner close. The wind up, the pitch... ground ball to ME, over to my right, damn it's under my glove into right field.... hold on, I've got to get in position... wait... there might be a play at the plate..."
