When Detroit and newly acquired slugger Prince Fielder come to U.S. Cellular Field in mid-April, the White Sox will counter with memories of former slugger Dick Allen.

The Sox announced Wednesday they will wear the red pinstriped jerseys with the Sox script across the front and red caps for their 13 Sunday home games, starting April 15 against the Tigers.

Those uniforms were worn by the Sox in 1972, when the team was led by Allen, the American League most valuable player who hit a league-leading 37 home runs, 113 RBIs and had a .420 on-base percentage and .603 slugging percentage.

The Sox were led by late legendary manager Chuck Tanner, and their pitching staff was led by left-handed knuckleballer Wilbur Wood, who led the AL with 24 wins, 376 2/3 innings pitched and 49 starts.

The Sox pushed Oakland into the final month before falling short in their bid for the AL West title.

“Being a part of those early 1970s White Sox teams, with a leader like Chuck Tanner and exciting players such as Dick Allen, Wilbur Wood and a young Goose Gossage, remains one of the fondest times in my career,” former Sox slugger Bill Melton said. “The red pinstripes and red baseball cap will bring back a lot of great memories for Sox fans from that generation.”

the Sox will distribute a 1972 replica jersey to the first 10,000 fans 13 and under on June 24, when the Sox play host to Milwaukee -- Fielder's former team

377 innings and 49 starts!

That's averaging almost 8 innings per start almost every third day.

My Dad says the first Sox game he took my brother to was a sunday doubleheader where Wilbur Wood started both games. I think he said they lost both games.

Let's hope Robin doesn't put together Sunday lineups that were as bad as Ozzie's

Rosenbloom's Thursday Tribune column sums up the state of the White Sox Winter nicely.
I love the last line where he says the best thing the Sox could do at the "Fest" is name Theo Epstein the GM!!!!

It's been a while since I went into a season with absolutely no hope for my team.

I wouldn't buy any tickets early. They will be available for just about any date you want during the season.

Weren't you a Bears fan just prior to the start of the 2010 season? I don't recall anyone reasonably holding out hope for that squad.

The best thing thing this bunch of morons can do at SoxFarce is announce they have signed Cespedes and released Alex Rios.

I think wearing the pink uniforms to support breast cancer is a great idea...or did the red run in the wash.

I think they should all smoke cigarettes in the dugout also.

Sadly, I'm feeling the same way.

Unless Comerica Park is destroyed by an earthquake or something, the Tigers should win the division by about 30 games.

They won't.

Verlander will get hurt, Cabrera will find the hooch again, and Prince will rediscover his love Pop Tart sandwiches and milk shake toothpaste.

Then Cleveland will win.

Yeah, give me a little hope, then dash it to the ground. The life of a White Sox fan....
