"We can have a successful year without making the playoffs...."

No you can't. If you don't at least make the playoffs, your season is a failure.

Just draw under 1.65 M, no expenses would be a success for Jerry.

Did he really say that? That's terrible.

I do think you can have a successful year without making the playoffs, but I don't think you should be planning it that way.

I'll be happy with anything from 60 to 110 wins.

I agree, Jorr. If you are coming off a 92 loss season, and then win 85 but miss the playoffs, that could be a success. The 2012 White Sox are a failure if they do not make the playoffs.

The season could be very successful 8)

He said as long as they compete the right way and Beckham, Adam, Alex, Morel, and Addison Reed step up and improve then its a good year.

If all those things happen, isn't there a good chance you're in the playoffs?

Wow, I would think Paulie would be smarter than that. That is not something your best player needs to be saying before the season, even if he believes it to be true.

Its a good year individually for all those guys. It would still be a failure overall for the team.

I don't necessarily think this year's team is a failure if it doesn't make the playoffs, Frank. If they somehow won 92 games and Detroit won 94 and the Wild Card came out of the West or East, I'd say that was a successful season. I'd be disappointed that they played well enough to win that many games and didn't make the postseason, but I wouldn't be disappointed in their performance and I wouldn't call the team a failure.

At this point, I'd be damn surprised if they won 92 games. But hope springs eternal. Any of you guys going to the opener?

Wouldn't anything above .500 be a success for this shit-fest? I feel the same way when looking at the 2012 Cubs season too.

In context you would think so, but I say no. After last year's All In failure, there is still a lot of money and actually a decent amount of talent on this team.

I don't think so. I mean, this basic team was the favorite to win the division last season. They've got to replace Buehrle's innings but I'd say it's pretty extreme to think that this same team most people thought would win last year is absolutely going to be terrible again. I know Terry loves beaten favorites so I assume he's picking the Sox to win the Central.

For the record, I also think the Cubs will be better than most people expect.

Me too.

84 wins for the Cubs.
88 for the Sox.

Kool-Aid!

I just don't see it with the Cubs. They were last in defense last year, they lost their 2 biggest run producers, but somehow they are gonna win 10-12 more games than last year? I just can't see them being more than a couple of wins better.

I think the Sox are gonna surprise a lot of people and possibly even contend for the division. The Cubs are looking better for the long term though.

I think with the Cubs it'd be more of a crazy random season where they'll win even though all logic dictates its impossible.

I agree. And I look at the weak division they're playing in. And I see that they added scrappy guys like DeJesus and I think the positivity and hope of the new regime can't do anything but help.

Paulie has sounded defeated for the past several months. I am sure he wouldn't mind being traded but would not ask for it himself.

Paulie would love to go to AZ this year. However, he would never say anything about it, he would never ask for a trade and will do his best to win and help other players while he is here.

But he drops a no trade clause to the West coast in a second.

Ball players in spring training should just stick to basic "baseball speak". What Konerko said just pisses off fans and gives the SCORE radio guys something to do besides blowing kisses at Mat Bowen.

I gotta believe this was taken out of context. One could argue that on paper, this team is better than the 2005 team before the season started. Konerko would know that more than anyone. But if they won 90+ games, and are in it until the end, it would be fair to say it was a good season. But if anyone actually thinks he's striving for a mediocre year, you're not thinking.

"I'M OUT!!!!"

New ad campaign: Konerko pushing his stack of chips across the table to Fielder and Verlander lookalikes. Brooks Boyer can thank me later.

Didnt you here the new ad campaign..."Don't count us out?"

Funny thing is, if I was Jerry...I would actually talk the talk. I would talk like they are a lock for the playoffs! Talk about guaranteed playoff tickets if you buy half a season. etc etc...whats the worse thing that happens? Nobody goes if they are bad? Gonna happen that way anways

They just don't know the fan. They got me for twenty games so far this year. I wasn't planning on it, but I figured I was going to go to at least that many. Might as well buy the fucking things.

I don't think it takes much to make the regular fan happy. How about when it's 40 degrees and rainy on April 15 and I'm out there watching them get pasted 11-1 by Detroit. Why not give the 900 people who stay to the end a voucher for a free ticket equal to what they had for that shitfest? The guy in the scout seats probably went back to Highland, Indiana in a limo after the third inning, so it won't cost you your top seats anyway. They could rule out the Cubs, Yankees, and Red Sox. Just another ticket for any other game. That would make me happy.

I'll never forget the hard line they took with me after they called a game against Tampa in '07 when it never even rained. They wouldn't return my money or give me a makeup on a Saturday. They wanted to replace my Saturday ticket with a fucking Monday afternoon. And the ticket rep wondered why I was pissed. They won't spend thirty bucks to keep me as a full season ticket guy, but they'll spend hundreds trying to get me back. It's idiotic.
