Post subject:  White Sox Off-Season

Can we move to the off-season or are we still thinking we can actually get on a winning streak in the last 14 games ? When was the last time the Sox have won 3 or 4 in a row ? If they were to make a playoff run in the last games of the season, being 3 games behind the Twins, the would probably have to go 11-3 just to catch the Twins, who in this scenario would go 8-6, and that's probably not realistic for the level of play that they have been performing at.

Tribune says the White Sox have $99 million committed to 12 players, and Bruce Levine says the White Sox won't go beyond $95 million next season in payroll - how do we field a 25 man roster given those restraints ?

Given that, a few questions for you guys:

1) Which starting pitcher do we move in the off-season, and are we looking for minor leaguers in return ? I'm guessing that Vazquez and Garcia are the leading candidates with Contreras a sleeper choice.

2) Should Buerhle's contract option be exercised by the White Sox for $9.5 million ? If we do this, question 1 becomes more likely to happen.

3) Should the White Sox consider moving 2 starting pitchers ? For example, let's say both Garcia and Vasquez are moved leaving Burehle, Garland, Contreras and McCarthy. One spot left - Is it Haeger ? Maybe Cotts gets a shot ? Is having one open spot that big a deal when you consider that we can shave $18 million off the payroll ?

4) What should be done to improve the bullpen ? Neil Cotts was bad this season, but he's talented. Do we keep him in the pen, and hope he comes around ? Thorton, McDougle and Jenks are set - anything else need to be done here ?

5) Who plays LF ?

6) Who plays CF ?

7) How active will the White Sox be in free agency ? Trade Market ?

8) Any realistic free agents/trade candidates who could help out ?

Joe is entering the final year of his contract next season and will hit it big in arbration. His agent scott b. and the soxs dont play nice so should the sexs send him to the angels in a pack. deal to get figgins or sign him and deal josh p. away....joe's back may decide, but i say keep joe and sign him long term.

great article in the Friday Trib. that basically stated that Kenny Williams will be a very busy man this winter. next year, 12 players total (with arbitration and whatnot) could put the Sox at 99 million.......
which is this years payroll.

4 games behind Minnesota, and 5 behind the Tigers with just 13 left....Given how well Minnesota is playing, and how the White Sox just can't get on any kind of roll, I'd say, barring a sweep of the Tigers, this is over.

This probably should have been another question I brought up. Joe Crede should be signed long-term, but, like you say, the problems the White Sox organization has with Crede, plus the looming Josh Fields, makes this situation one to watch.

Lose 1 v. Detroit and it's over

This Detroit series is the Sox last stand...and they must sweep. This is not a good position.

Next year, Garcia is gone. I have heard thoughts of him going to Cincinnati for Ryan Freel and prospects. Contrary to many people's opinions, I think there will be many teams interested in Garcia if he is placed on the open market. Being assured of 200 innings and double digit wins is an attraction to almost any team. In addition he will have a sub 4 ERA in the NL. That is 10 million in savings.

Jenks, Thornton, Mc Dougle, Cotts all should be back. It looks like Haeger is going to get a shot at long relief. That leaves one spot in the bullpen.

I think left field is an open competion next year. People say Pods should not be offered arbitration. I would hate to let him simply walk, as someone will surely want him. Offer him arbitration and trade him away. Uribe must go as well. Ozzie dicks around with Anderson, meanwhile Uribe is hitting about the same with an almost impossibly bad OBP. Still there must be a market out there for a shortstop who hits 18 HR's and can play good defense.

Crede has 2 more years until free agency. If you can sign him to a reasonable deal for 3 years, you do it. If not, he starts the year in Chicago and is dealt either in August or the end of the year. There is not way the Sox go into FA with Boras when they have a player like Fields waiting in the wings.

So much to do. Shit this is depressing.

D-Day: War's over, man. Wormer dropped the big one.
Bluto: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.

Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...
[thinks hard]
Bluto: the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!
[runs out, alone; then returns]

Bluto: What the fuck happened to the Delta I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Wormer, he's a dead man! Marmalard, dead!

Niedermeyer...
Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.
Bluto: We're just the guys to do it.

D-Day: Let's do it.
Bluto: LET'S DO IT!

I've thought the season was a lost cause since May--back when Bear "I've always thought this team was the cream of the AL" down was predicting 110 wins and another world title for the Sock.

I would definitely dump Garcia for next year and find out the market value of Vazquez, Contreras, and Buehrle. KW should move one of those three.

Leadoff hitter also must be addressed. Pods needs to be replaced with a legitimate on-base, base-stealing guy. If it's possible to upgrade short, I'd be for that, too....

If the Cubs don't resign him....I'm not sure where the White Sox are going to get the money to sign free agents though when they're already at their $99 million for next season with just 12 players. I understand they are going to save around 9 million by trading a Garcia (probably the favorite), but they stil have to fill out 1/2 a roster without increasing payroll.

I don't like Pierre. Bad defensively and not great from an OBP perspective.

Haven't seen him play much, but I don't like what I've heard or read about him.

He will be 26 next year. He has a weak arm.

On the good side, Sweeney should be ready by mid 2007. Fields can learn the outfield next year and be ready for late 2007.

I think it's going to be those guys, with Owens, competing for the job next spring in LF.
