Most people seem to agree a buyout is likely. What is the likely outcome from there? Is he likely to go back to the NL or is possible they resign him to a more reasonable deal?

If he stays healthy all year, the best guaranteed money he might get is from the Sox. They could buy him out and re-up with him for like a 2 year deal with an option for a 3rd.

Even if he wins the Cy Young, the Sox are not gonna pay him the $21mil he would get next year with the club option. I believe if he opts to test the free ajent market, he would find a lot of sloppy seconds. If he tests out the free agent market, he would get a small guaranteed deal with a lot of incentives. I also think teams would be leery of signing him to longer than a 1 year deal.

This is what I heard discussed on ESPN Radio's "Waddle & Silvy" earlier today as those guys were actually in Bristol, CT broadcasting live. Jake Peavy's contract next year pays him $22 million or the White Sox can buy him off for $4 million. Keep in mind that Peavy's contract dates back to when he played for the Padres. The Sox are in a tough spot, because should they move him at the deadline, the team that Peavy would go would be on the hook for the $22 million he originally signed with San Diego a while back prior to getting dealt here.

I'd hate to see them lose him if he keeps this up I'm just thinking if he does and tests the market the Yanks or Red Sox will overpay for him, especially if their pitching problems continue.

I'd have to think he'd be the first guy to go if the Sox make the call that they have no chance.

That market has been dead for awhile.

What happens first? Sox drop out of race or Peavy gets hurt/starts getting hit?

Anyway, he's a nice piece to have. Although, the trend of trading for a few months of a player is down. Not giving up king's ransoms anymore (i.e. Brewers for CC)

Well, both the Yankees & Red Sox have these things going for them...

1. Unlimited Resources/Deep Pockets/Better Farm Systems
2. Incredible TV Contracts (The Yankees have YES & the Red Sox have NESN)
3. Both Teams Have Pitching Holes in their Starting Rotation

Sox trade him at the deadline to a contender. His arm then proceeds to literally fall off and Kenny looks like a brilliant strategist again.

I'd like to see the Sox sign him to a lifetime contract.

I didn't realize that. Not good.

I wouldn't bet on him getting hurt this season. The problem from the Sox perspective is that nobody really seems to be giving up top pitching prospects for rentals these days. But if you added Peavy to the Cardinals rotation, for example, that's a serious upgrade to their number five guy. Maybe there's the right situation out there somewhere if and when that time comes.

He already has a lifteime personal services contract. It's in Jerry Reinsdorf's desk.

But if he keeps pitching like he is, thats an oddity. Not often an Ace type is available. Texas has injuries happening already, and even with their pitching depth, I could see them going for the Jaker.

Braves or Dodgers too.

Or maybe he'll lead the Sox to the playoffs

I think the pickle the White Sox are in is this. Are they contending? Are they rebuilding? Are they both? I think the way this roster is structured, I don't think these Sox know themselves what they are. I think the ONLY thing going for them is that they're in a winnable division. This considering the Tigers' slow start and a great deal of skeptism about the Indians, and you don't have to be closer Chris Perez to realize that.

I think the perception is that Peavy, should the Sox fall out of this race, could be the missing link to get a true contender over the top and into the MLB Playoffs. Right now, it's hard to tell if the Sox will be a buyer or seller. So far, if attendance means anything, it doesn't look like they're in the buying mood.

If SHARK is correct and that option automatically vests if he's traded, it would make it that much tougher to move him.

If the option kicks in on a trade then there is no way to move him for anything of value.

Yankees possibly. They are desperate for starting pitching. Though that means they don't have much in the way of young arms to trade back.

Peavy holds all the cards: he'll squeeze all the cash out the situation. That means the Sox won't get anything of value in return.

Yeah, maybe you get lucky and find someone decent... Even if you dont it is worth a shot. They arent going to pay him next year and Jake strikes me as the type to get pissed if a team slights him.

Well, one of those arms they have now, Frank, is in their bullpen. That's Freddy Garcia. Andy Pettitte, who I thought retired in the offseason, was on their mound the other day, I believe vs. the Reds at home.

Even though the Yankees have unlimited resources and a huge TV deal with YES Network, they don't have much of a farm system after all. I stand corrected about that. I think that explained why they didn't make a big splash at the trade deadline last July.

That being said, the Yankees will do whatever it takes to go for it, especially if the postseason is within reach.

If the O's are in it at the deadline any chance they'd want to rent him for a possible run?

If they are still in it at that point I think they should go for it. How many years in the AL East are both the powerhouses going to struggle?

That would be something...The Orioles appear legit for the first time in a long time. I don't want to get too carried away, but Buck Showalter has quite a reputation turning bad teams into contenders.

Texas seems like the most obvious spot to me.

If he continues at the same pace for the rest of the year, what about invoking the option and keeping him at 21 million. It's a one year deal so its insureable against injury. He'd be coming off a 20 win season and sub 3 ERA. It gives them another season to get THE GREAT Nestor Molina ready.

The Rangers appear to be the team to beat again in the A.L. West. I think they've got deep pockets of their own down there.

Well, the Orioles start today 2 games ahead of the Rays in the AL East, while the Yankees are 5 1/2 games out in 4th place & the Red Sox 6 1/2 games behind in the cellar. Whether or not that lasts remains to be seen.

You know, SHARK, there isn't any reason why a team can't rebuild and contend at the same time, especially now that ten teams make the postseason. Some writers decided to say that no one can rebuild and contend and somehow that became accepted as gospel and repeated ad nauseum by the danny bernsteins of the world. Many teams rebuild without Theo coming in and making them one of the worst teams to play in the last twenty years.

If you want an example of rebuilding on the fly and contending, look no further than our very own '05 White Sox. If replacing two guys who have combined for nearly 3000 RBI with Scott Podsednik and Jermaine Dye isn't rebuilding, I don't know what is.
