Since they started Interleague Play in 1997, there have always been 6 games a season between the Cubs & White Sox, 3 games at Wrigley Field & 3 more at U.S. Cellular Field, but that might soon be changing.

Although MLB Commissioner Allan H. "Bud" Selig declined to discuss the specifics in regards to next year's schedule, the first with 15 teams in each league with the Houston Astros switching from the National League Central to the American League West, natural rivalries such as the Cubs/Sox matchup might be reduced from the current 6 games to only 4 in future seasons, according to MLB Players Association bossman Michael Weiner.

While Weiner hinted that the two in-city rivals might end up playing a pair of 2-game series in each park in future seasons, he didn't necessarily dismiss the possibility of keeping the current 3-game series in each ballpark either.

Here's a link with plenty more on what it could mean, perhaps as early as next season...

Counting must not be a SHARK strong suit....

1997 3 games at The Cell
1998 3 games at Wrigley

Then form 1999 through 2012 6 games a year

While the likelihood is just a pair of 2 game series between not just the White Sox & Cubs, but the other natural rivals such as the Mets & Yankees in New York, the Dodgers & Angels in Los Angeles/Anaheim, the Giants & A's in San Francisco/Oakland and so on, my own solution would be to have the rivals play 1 4-game series a season and alternate ballparks every year.

That doesn't seem terribly equitable. I would just keep the three and three. If this 15/15 alignment is supposed to mean year-round interleague, there should be enough room on the schedule to maintain the only interleague games anyone cares about.

In the case of our series, I'd put them on Memorial Day weekend and 4th of July so that both of the big summer cookout holidays can be complemented by intracity baseball. I think that would be nice.

Each team would probably rather schedule games around those holidays against teams not likely to draw as well as these games generally do. These tickets are usually (not this season though) easy to sell. As far as being the only interleague games anyone cares about, I have to disagree. If you are a Sox fan and have games that season VS the Reds, you have the chance to go see Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce as well as perhaps seeing Johnny Cueto pitch. Those are good players a serious Baseball fan might really enjoy seeing. As a Cub fan, I very much enjoy seeing great players from A.L. teams that the Cubs do not play against on a yearly basis. Often, those games are of much more interest to me than the games VS the Sox.
