I dont agree with this at all...

Hellloooo? Sox fans?
Good baseball, empty seats

Image
No problem spreading out in the bleachers at U.S. Cellular Field, where the first-place Sox average 23,815 in attendance — 24th in the major leagues. (Brian Cassella, Chicago Tribune / July 25, 2012)

August 3,2012

So let's get this straight.

Cubs: 43 wins, 60 losses with a 0.1 percent chance of making the playoffs, according to ESPN. That's right. The decimal point precedes the digit.

At this point, the best reason to go to Wrigley Field is to watch the other team. At least Cubs fans on Tuesday got to watch the Pirates'A.J. Burnett pitch a near no-hitter Tuesday.

White Sox: 57 wins, 47 losses with an 81 percent chance of making the playoffs.

They're 10 games over .500 and 21/2 games in front of Detroit in first place. They've got Paul Konerko hitting .323, near the top of the American League. They've got Adam Dunn, with the most home runs in either league. They've gotA.J. Pierzynski, who tied his career high for home runs Tuesday and still has 58 games to play.

This is exciting baseball.

So, Sox fans, where are you?

The story is as worn as Chicago's Old Water Tower. North Side team draws big crowds more consistently — often twice the fans — as South Side team, even when South Side team plays better ball.

But this is really good ball. Sox general manager Kenny Williams acquired three new players. Jerry Reinsdorf is investing in the team. Why aren't the fans?

Cubs attendance is averaging 37,218 per game, filling 90 percent of the stadium and ranking 10th in Major League Baseball attendance statistics.

The Sox? Average attendance stands at 23,815, filling just 59 percent ofU.S. Cellular Fieldand ranking 24th in MLB draw.

For all the chutzpah Sox fans flick at Cubs fans who, according to legend and years of observation, attend games to drink beer and get a tan, Sox fans apparently don't attend games to drink beer or get a tan or watch excellent baseball. They don't attend games, period.

Go ahead and blame something, Sox fans. Ticket prices. Parking. Big screen TVs. The 1994 MLB strike.

Just don't blame poor performance as the reason for not supporting your team. Time to call that bluff.

I don't really find the subject of attendance the slightest bit interesting, but I am curious as to exactly how the Cubs "often draw twice the fans" as the Sox when the Sox are averaging 24,000 and Wrigley field holds about 39,000.

I'll go to the playoffs...unless I can sell my ticket to Northside Dan for double the face price.

Exactly. That's why I find bernstein saying that the Cubs aren't worth watching to be so offensive. He cheers Theo's plan every chance he gets but the fan shouldn't watch for what, two years? That would be like me promoting a menu change at bernstein's favorite restaurant but never going to eat there.

And how can a bunch of guys who never pay for a ticket to any games in their lives scold fans about how often they should attend?

This weekend will have big crowds. Since the All Star break, the Sox have had just 3 home games. Three home games. The attendance for those 3 games; 37,788; 34,715; 32,261

104K for a 3 game series against the Twins in the middle of July.
If the Sox win, the fans will come out. We hear it every year. We will see it this year as well.

They also have four hour work days, rather than eight or more.

Attendance will be higher next year due to this year. There's a huge time lag due to fan expectations and interest.

Not to mention, live where it's a 20 minute excursion to get to a game, whereas, personally, it's an hour or more depending on traffic.

No there won't. People will come out next year if the Sox are winning, if they aren't there will be a empty seats. This year has nothing to do with next year.

There would be a difference next year. In 2006 (year after winning it all, the sox ranked 9th in Avg attendance. That's a pretty big leap from where they are now.

ok good point if the Sox win the WS this year next year will be impacted. But without the WS title, the attendance issue will be the same.

That's because the Sox were the best team in baseball for the first half of the season in 2006 and finished with 90 wins.

If they were a 75 win team, the fans would've stayed home.

You don't think the championship gave them a huge bump in April/May 2006? I disagree.

Does he expect Cubs fans to start going to White Sox games? The White Sox just have less fans. It's as simple as that.

The Cubs, when good, have a demand for tickets that outpaces supply by a significant margin. If Wrigley Field could fit every person who wanted to go to a game attendance would be way down for them. Wrigley could likely fill a stadium of 75,000 during the good times during weekends. That's why tickets on the secondary market get so expensive. The White Sox don't have as many people who want to go so they don't have the built in buffer. If I had to guess, total demand for Cubs tickets is down close to 50%, but attendance isn't going to drop 50% because of it.

As Frank said, the attendance was great for a midweek series, and likely will as White Sox fans are finally buying into the fact that at worst this team will be a contender for the playoffs.

Season tickets sales were way down this year due to hard hard they sucked LAST year. There was no interest in the team for the first two months b/c everyone thought they would suck based on LAST year's performance. If they make the playoffs this year there will be A LOT more interest early next year.

JR will promote playoff tickets if you buy a remaining season ticket plan. Fans will scoop those up as the playoffs become a strong possibility. Then JR will require the purchase of all possible playoff tickets in advance. If they do not make it past the first round, he will ask you to use that money as a downpayment on a ticket for next year.
