Someone will claim him before the Sox get a chance.

But isn't there a slight fear that the Phils may actually just let someone eat his contract?

That is one hell of a contract left on him.

Sure.

He's owed a lot of paper. No way Mr. Reinsdorf lets Kenny take that on.

I am aware. The phillies fire sale and his huge contract make this one interesting.

This.

It's my second favorite part of the first week of August.

My favorite part is the general overt overreaction of multiple people (not accusing you, UMN) over who get's placed on waivers when the names leak.

NO WAY they will bite on that. Just getting over the burn of Rios/Peavy and now Danks.

Ya, I doubt KW will want to get riosed in this situation. A team like the Dodgers who didn't score their starter and seemingly have money to burn could bite.

I realize nothing big and crazy usually happens with the waiver trades but this one intrigues me.

Just more typical Cubs fan trolling in the Sox section.

That's probably true with Peavy but if Rios finishes out this year this well I think he has to be viewed as providing enough production to justify what they pay him.

The nut job Philllie fans would burn that town down if they let Lee go for nothing.

Possibly, althoughtI think his lows were too low to call it a good move

Satisfactory. Adequate.

It depends a lot on what happens this year. If Rios ends up being a driving force behind a team that makes the playoffs and does well I think it makes up for his poor production on teams that weren't going anywhere.

He also has a lot of teams he's able to veto a trade to. Like 15 or something like that.

I'm pretty sure he can't veto a waiver claim. Can we check on thaaaaaaaaaat.

Does that come into play if the Phillies just let the claim go through?

I don't think so. Just meant if he's claimed and a trade is discussed. Just adding to the extreme unlikelihood he's moved.

Yeah, when he wins MVP of the World Series there will be no question

He can block a waiver claim. Huh.

A player with a no-trade clause who is claimed on Major League waivers must be pulled back if the player’s no-trade clause allows him to block a deal to the claiming club.

Bad in the first 1/4 season the acquired him, good to excellent in 2010, horrible in 2011, excellent in 2012. The Rios contract has not been a burn.

Interesting. I figured this had to be the case or it would be a nice loophole to evade the NTC.

Look at the cash outlay of Rios & Peavy over the years versus the payout. No way they paid off in terms of wins, playoff appearances, and cash into Jerry's account. Just when KW regains some trust, he's going to put his neck on the line again? I doubt it.

Complete failure in 2 seasons (40 games in a pennant race counts) where they were counting on him

The money is not too bad. It looked worse when it was signed by the Jays, market caught up
