•The Padres are starting to listen to offers for Chase Headley, Bill Madden of the New York Daily News reports. The Padres tabled extension talks with Headley earlier this winter after the two sides were far apart on terms. The third baseman is under contract through the 2014 season and Madden argues that the Yankees should make a move for a young star like Headley or Giancarlo Stanton in order to bolster the lineup and ensure the team will contend this year

With Rios and Paul's money coming off the books couldn't you center a deal around tank, floyd and other minor league talent and get a deal done and lock him up ??

seriously, after having a ~4-5ish year run of being a perennial .260/14/60 type guy, he churns out one nice !!! season and all of a sudden the sox should run out and lock him up? i don't trust chase headley; granted i'm not exactly a maven on my padres baseball where i watched them a bunch of times last year and saw a guy who made himself look dangerous at the plate, still, i'm leery of the brady anderson year being a factor here as opposed to the light turning on and 2012 chase headley being your chase headley from now til 2017 or something, whatever would comprise the bulk of the "lock up."

unless you could get him for a song, i wouldn't be in a hurry to do that. i'd sooner toss some prospect peanuts their way and see if i could get a kid like kyle blanks who could be a serious 40HR threat @ the joan if he could hit .250+ and stay on the field. i hear dj on the thursday broadcast str8up laughing at a texter who asked if it's reasonable to expect adam dunn to have a better season this year because HEH HEH, adam dunn hit 40HR so to ask him to give you more than that.... well that's asking a whole lot. so if you take some walks on the white sox and hit some home runs, you don't even have to hit .230 to be an unquestionable success. ergo, i'd go for my guy blankman before i run out and give away courtney hawkins or whatever SD would want for chase fk'n headley.

They could get Headley and then trade him for prospects at the end of July.

We may try, and fail, but we aren't trying to fail.

I won't just assume everyone is familiar with my Conor Gillaspie thread.

However, the Bears getting their hands on Bushrod and the Sox/Cubs getting Headley would provide for some entertaining radio.

Sox don't have any pieces that I would trade right now.

Headley would do well on the south side. He's had poor numbers at home (Petco Park) which is notorious for being a pitchers park. His career OPS at home is 700. His overall career OPS is .769 which implies he is a strong hitter (800+) away from petco. He's hitting the prime of his career (he will be 29 this May).

It really depends on whether or not you think Chase Headley is the guy you saw from ~08-11 as opposed to last year. He always could swipe a few bags alongside ~15hr, but to just up and ~30/30 with 100+ runs scored (methinks) and go from perennial fantasy baseball emergency plan to top-5 offensive 3B? You gotta back it up this year and show me that you're more than a guy who played his ass off to get the hell out of SD.

I have no idea what the fuck SD is doing in the big/ger picture, but if they're rushing to cash out Headley after he finally blossoms as a player that should tell you something. Then again, I still have no idea why the fuck they traded Rizzo short of owing Theo/Jed a favor. That move seriously shoulda been investigated, but since it benefits one of the big flagship franchises it never will be.

That said, I'd back the Cubs trying to make a move for him since I think the SD GM is thankful for Theo/Jed getting him the job. You could prolly get him for Samardzija str8up, if not even less than that.

You are absolutely right but looking at the last few years of 3B, even a 270/15/70 line (with a 770 OPS) looks damn good. Youk got to 15 HRs but still hit like 240 with a 770 OPS and people thought he was the answer there.

I also like the fact that he's a switch hitter so that solves part of the lack of left handed hitter problem.

San Diego is moving in the fences a bit this year, so he might put up a few more dingers if he stays there.
