White Sox Getting Calls On Veterans
By Steve Adams [June 21, 2013 at 1:42pm CST]
We learned earlier today that the Cubs are "open for business" and ready to sell, and it sounds like Chicago's other team may not be far behind. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports spoke with White Sox GM Rick Hahn recently, who confirmed that other teams have begun to express interest in his players:

"We are getting phone calls, and they will probably become a little bit more voluminous if we don't turn it around pretty quickly," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said.
Heyman's sources indicate that Alex Rios and Alexei Ramirez will at least be discussed, with one rival general manager telling him that Rios will draw more interest. Rios,32, is owed $12.5MM in 2014, the final guaranteed year of his contract, though his deal contains a club option as well. Ramirez, 31, is controlled through 2015 and owed $9.5MM in 2014, $10MM in 2015 and has a $1MM buyout on his $10MM club option for 2016.

Heyman also speculates that names such as Jake Peavy, Jesse Crain, Matt Thornton, Matt Lindstrom and perhaps even Gordon Beckham will become available if the White Sox do indeed take the position of sellers this July. Crain, of course, is on a historic run, having fired 28 shutout innings over his past 28 appearances with a 37-to-7 K/BB ratio in that time.

Beckham as well. This was a guy who they were considering non tendering at the end of last year. It would be excellent if they could now turn him into a nice prospect.

The guy I would really want gone if I were Hahn is Alexi. That is a big contract for what he gives you but he might be a good fit on a defensively challenged team like the Tigers.

It really is a blessing KW is gone. He was about the worst GM I have seen at maximizing value in a trade for MLB level players.

A team that gets Paulie for a playoff run will be getting a steal. I think he will have a big second half.

What might the Sox be able to get for Reed?

man, even tho he fell off of a cliff in 2011, who woulda thought that when kenny got duped into getting alex rios in late 2009 that he'd end up being the best player on the damn team?

2010 and 2012 ended up mirroring or even slightly surpassing his previous career year of 2007, and this season he's on pace to have another solid ~20/20 to ~25/35 season when it's all said and done. in the big picture it's kind of apropos that a guy left for dead on waivers would end up being the best player on the whitesox for the first half of the decade.

but yeah, i reckon they should sell just about anyone they can get solid-to-good returns for. it remains to be seen how much the sox will hold on to in order to keep potential/season-ticket-holders convinced that "if everything goes right we're right in this!" cuz the peavy signing was basically them tossing a bone out there to people who have no interest in going out to watch a baseball game if the team doesn't go out and "prove" to them that they're "in it to win it" even tho the writing has been on the wall since late 2011 that this team wasn't going to even think about doing any contending until at least 2015.

the only problem with that mindset is after 2015 you've got theo and pals penciled in for their run of dominance from 2016-2025 or thereabouts, so they midaswell do a total rebuild and load up for a potential run at the end of theo's reign because anything else would be stupid when you know where the title's going for the better part of a decade.

I'm indifferent. On one hand he may be injured a lot during his career and thus becomes a disappointment, unload him while he still has high levels of value.

On the other hand the White Sox keep him to anchor an above average rotation for the next several years.

Question: What's the ceiling on Sale?

IMO Sale is untouchable right now. But he is the only one. If you can get something for anyone else you do it.

A couple things here. I'm all for starting to move guys. I've been tired of Alexei's nonchalant play at short for years. There's a real dearth of shortstops so he should be able to land you something decent. But you still ave to play the season. Instead of trying to win the game yesterday, they were more interested in showing the world that Crain can close one out. It blew up in their faces.

Also, and this isn't trolling, but rather a serious baseball question. I know the Cub future is brighter than the hottest star and the Sox future is dismal because I read that and hear it on the radio everyday, but are Sale and Santiago really worse building blocks than whatever the Cubs' "core" is?

IMO Sale is the best building block in the city right now. But after that it is hard to see much to be excited about for the Sox. Obviously that can change, and even change quickly depending on what they are able to do at the deadline.

The Cubs appear to have a few more potential building blocks. Rizzo seems to be best of those blocks right now.

No. But after that there's very little. Cubs are a little ahead in that they have "building block" candidates in the minors. The Sox drafting of athletes over ballplayers is kind of worrisome for a rebuild that's going to start. But, Sox do have a knack for developing pitchers out of nowhere. So maybe not that far away from Cubs.

In fairness though, if a fairly routine play at SS is made, the Sox are out of the inning with a 1 run lead still.

You are forgetting Addison Reed and Quintana as well.

I'll take a good, young pitching staff as a core over hitters every time. You can cobble together a decent lineup that can win with good pitching.

Well, those guys aren't really what I'd call building blocks. Outside of Rivera, closers are up and down. Reed can be replaced. If I could sell him high, I would. And Quintana has been better than I thought he could be for longer than I thought he could be. Maybe he's a Buehrle. But I doubt it.

I wouldn't move Reed unless somebody offers up some top top top prospect. Reed has been very good overall and does not make any money. He seems like a guy you could try to build a bullpen around for now.

Sure, they aren't Chris Sale level in terms of "building blocks". What they is young, cheap guys currently performing at the MLB level who fit in defined slots on a team. They have a 1, 3, 4 and closer under controll for 4+ more years. That is a nice framework. If Jones rebounds, that is really an impressive group.

Hahn can get a good prospect for Alexi.

Feel free to pull the trigger on that one.

I disagree.

Maybe a few people with loud voices from 1-6 on weekdays say that.

I dont think a lot of others hold such a stupid position

Just yesterday I heard Buster Olney talking about the trade market going through Chicago and started with the Sox and how they're set up nicely.

Anyone who is really paying attention and knows the game know the cubs just have a few more suspects but the Sox have more at the MLB level
