I don't understand how they haven't backed up Paulino with another veteran for that 5th starter spot. He is really nothing more than a guy they are rolling the dice on.

I don't find the starting staff to be all that impressive.

It was his first spring training start after TJ surgery. I think it's a bit too early to start making judgements. Besides he's just the 5th starter. They will use him maybe 2-3 times in April. If he isn't effective they have time to find someone or bring a guy up from triple A.

The timing of the thread is coincidental to Paulino having a bad outing.

He is the type of pitcher where you bring 2-3 of him in at the minimum and let them battle for the last spot. However, the Sox seem to just given him the 5th spot

No way.

There is no such thing as a 5th starter who has his job at the begginning of spring. (except if you have 5 Aces like the 04 Cubs)

Seriously, Im sure there are a few other guys they're looking at.

Post subject:  Re: The Spring Training Thread

It's not Paulino or bust. They have other options. Andre Rienzo, Eric Surkamp (who they really like), Chris Beck and Chris Bassitt to name a few. If Paulino doesn't work out they can call on any of these guys to fill the roll. If he does work out it buys them a little more time in triple A.

On the list of White Sox worries 5th starter is down on the list. Below who the hell is going to catch and why the fuck is De Aza still on this team.

  I look forward to another season of Keyser losing it often regarding De Aza

DeAza will be fine because he isn't the primary leadoff man or CF this year. Alexei is a bigger problem than DeAza.

After what Reinzo showed last year he should be in the driver's seat for the 5th spot.

Are you an undercover Cub fan trying to make Sox fans look bad?

DeAza is a 20-20 guy who is not a great defender and not a leadoff guy. The Sox had little choice but to play him in CF and bat him at the top of the lineup last year. He should be of MUCH more value to the team playing a corner OF spot and batting 2nd, 7th, or 8th most of the time.

More like a 15-15 guy, especially with the fewer games he'll play this year. Definitely an improvement having him out of CF, and not leading off. Strikeout rate is ridiculously high to be in the top half of the lineup without having any power to compensate for it. My guess is the 7 hole most times he goes out there.

He was off to a good start last year, and ended the season well once his wrist got healthy.

FF, this offense is not going to be near as bad as it was last year. Garcia, Eaton, Davidson, Abrew...not saying they are going to score 900 runs but I think after a slow start they will end up being fun to watch.

I'm definitely more interested than I was last year. I also like that we can see most of our future core at the major league level to start the season. I don't have the patience or the interest to follow minor leaguers.

That is what I like best about this new regime/approach. Get guys in here that are MLB ready or will be in a year or so.

Davidson will break camp with the MLB team.

Anyway, Gillaspie has this thing covered.

If he doesn't it's ok. If he starts in triple A to work on his defense and gets called up in May or June I won't be disappointed. If he spends all season in the minors and is a September call up I will be terribly disappointed.

I meant to say that I don't think he will break camp with the MLB team

I expect that he will play only against RHP, so he should get about 350-400AB. I see him as a .280-12-60 kind of guy with a .340 type OBP.

John Danks was clocked at 90-91 mph during his three scoreless innings in his Cactus League debut Thursday.

Boy is this an encouraging sign. Danks was mostly 87-90 last year. Hopefully he gets even stronger as the spring goes on and he can get close to where he was pre-injury.
