He shouldn't have been hired.

Eh, who cares... Sox are more than a manager away from contending. Just as long as he doesn't Dusty Baker the pitchers, I don't really care.

Weren't they going to make the playoffs until the last week or so of the season during his first year?

 Probably not but if I recall correctly they were exceeding expectations in his first year until they collapsed near the end. I thought it was an auspicious start to his managerial career but I guess not.

and the jump from California High School part time roving instructor to MLB manager, might also be a select club.

They were saying last night that the Rockies manager was a former player and was a high school coach with no professional coaching experience prior to being hired.

This seems to bother you very much. How jealous are you of Robin Ventura and other Reinsdorf employees?

Very jealous and it bothers me very much. I was kinda hoping I would get the job. Thought my 2 years of Tee ball coaching, combined with limited play in the minors (or as Leary would say, DePaul club ball) would at least get me an interview.

WW was in Rockies front office for 9 years scouting. Was maybe going to be next GM, but when his kid made HS team he went to help him. Then came back to Rockies.

So you agree that he had no professional coaching experience.

Good talk, Russ.

Just so I am clear on this one....

You start the thread that says FIRE VENTURA and then go on to provide support for him?

Bump. Allowed a foul ball to be called a HR. Not sure Robin knows there's a replay/challenge system instituted now.

That's a big problem with replay. Is the goal to get the calls right or to set up an arbitrary system to get the calls right occasionally depending on a manager's decision? Before the umpires made the calls and that was that. They were right or wrong, but they did their best and everybody lived within the same paradigm. Now, sometimes calls are overturned (correctly or incorrectly), sometimes they go unchallenged, and it's just like officiating roulette. Just trust the umps to get it right most of the time. Here's a case where they didn't and replay didn't help.

I'm not even a Sox fan and I'm kinda ticked at how Ventura fucked up tonight. Should have left Sale finish 8th.

Did you think that before Petricka gave up the runs or after?

I thought it before. Sale was getting up there in pitches, yes, but unless Sale gets into the ASG, he's probably not pitching again for 8-9 days.

Post subject:  Re: Fire Ventura

Ok. It didn't even enter my mind to leave him in because I didn't think even this awful bullpen could give up 5 runs before they got 4 outs.

Post subject:  Re: Fire Ventura

I don't think it's a matter of the ASG coming up. It's not Venturas fault they lost this game, even though he does suck. Petricka has been pitching really well. There was no reason to feel worry giving him the ball with a 4 run, 4 out lead.

Post subject:  Re: Fire Ventura

Its the situation. The guy hit an infield single, and only got to 2nd because Alexei didn't feel like he needed to cover the bag. You have one of (if not the) best pitcher in the AL on the mound, pitching a shutout, 2 outs with a runner on 3rd in the 8th inning. Have Petricka (Putnam, whoever) ready to go and if Sale gives up that run you yank him. He should have been left in to try and get that final out of the 8th for one more batter. Going into the 9th inning up 4-0 or 4-1 looks a lot better.

Also as I pointed out in the other thread, Viciedo was thrown out at 2nd and DeAza at home last night. More bad baserunning, which also falls squarely on Ventura.
