Yep, something about the writers of newspapers who wanted to shorten the then-name of "White Stockings". One of the best names in the 4 major sports.

I'm not sure but for a little a while with a 3-1 lead in the NLCS they were known as the yellow stockings.

"Colts" is a good name...don't know why they didn't keep it either. If memory serves me (and it often doesn't, that's why I love Google), the "Cubs" nickname was suggested by a newspaper writer and it stuck.
