my guess is that there is limited upside to having him pitch in meaningless games now. he's already pitched a lot this year. maybe he tries to put a little extra mustard on the cheese and tweaks something. i dunno.
If there's any benefit to him not pitching due to his contractual clock, that would make sense to me. I agree with you as well. He has pitched a lot of innings, and the Sox could ultimately decide that more innings in September won't make enough of a difference for him come 2015.
YES there is a HUGE advantage service time. Every day he would be on a MLB roster counts ..even in September. It is exactly why the Cubs are leaving Bryant on the minors. One key is that both of them have Boras as an agent and you know his reputation and most likely Boras would NOT sign an early extesion like Sale and Rizzo did.
A side issue also would be if a player on the roster gets hurt he cannot be sent down so he could accrue even more service while inactive.
He would not be put on the 40 man roster since that would take up a spot needlessly and tie the GM's hands.
I would guess the Sox will do what almost every other team does and will send Rodon back down next spring until mid-May so they get the extra year of team control. Remember they can only control a player for 6 seasons but by waiting until mid Mya they get an extra 4.5 months of control or nearly 7 seasons.
