Seems very un-Sox-like, but according to Jon Heyman, they are expressing interest: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon ... ja-on-down Either way, says they will land a RH starter from the crop available. |

Selling one jar at a time of Dirt will get that done. |

I appreciate the Sox desire to add more big name pitchers, but shouldn't they really be looking at big name bats? Granted, the back end of the rotation needs some shoring up, but the top end is pretty damn good. I think the Sox should be looking at bullpen and lineup help instead of possibly $180M on a pitcher. |

Scherzer, Sale would be a hell of a 1/2. Sign some defensive help, rebuild the bullpen and you have a shot if you can make it to the playoffs. |

Hahn wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't check in but no one thinks they will sign a top tier free agent pitcher. If they go they go the free agent route it would be for a 2nd tier guy like Brandon McCarthy or Jason Hammel. Personally I'd like to see them go the trade route for Samardzija or Mat Latos then sign them to long term deals. |

Why give up assets (that they don't have a lot of) for Shark if you have to pony up a market-value deal anyway? |

I know it doesn't seem like it but the offense was pretty good last year, especially when Eaton was in the lineup. The difference between the Sox winning and losing last year was the bullpen. |

I agree he needs to check and it is part of his job, but the guy is about as humble as they come, who do you think tells the media they are looking at Scherzer? |

They did the same thing with Tanaka. No harm in asking. I hope they don't sign him though. |

As some in the Sox system believe that leaking this info makes the fan base think they are aggresively looking to always go for it. This isnt my opinion, its what they do as a marketing technique, so I am asking the Sox fans, does it work? Do you feel they are going for it and thus as a result end up buying tickets? Which is the goal of all marketing to CONSUME a Product via Purchase. |

There were more leaks on Martin and Lester than anyone else this offseason. but cubs had martin here and would have probably made him an offer if Toronto didnt get crazy and by all reports the cubs have the highest offer on the table right now. Dont think those are reports intended to draw interest at all, but that is just my opinion. Dont know that the Scherzer report is meant for that purpose, but I am sure that in the past They released this info as a marketing ploy and just dont think it ever worked |

Yeah, and Bucky Chris has a new update on it every 6 hours or so. The Cubs aren't exactly in stealth mode either. |

I don't think the majority of Sox fans pays this close attention. If they signed Scherzer I would be upset, not excited. But then I'm just along for the ride hoping the Sox catch lightning in a bottle the next three years (or less). |

I think at least 28 teams would be somewhat interested. |

I think Lester right now doesnt like being the pace horse for Scherzer at this point. Addtionally, now that the price is basically set, the Dodgers are probably taking a look, thinking they could afford it. The leaking of info by the Cubs would be counter productive at this point. You gave Lester an offer he can now shop. Its like buying a house, making an offer and then letting the seller go ask the other prospective people if they want to beat your offer. Plus, they sold all their season tickets, so no need to create hype in December. Brick, you have agreed with me in the past about the poor marketing...and this is an example of it. Addtionally when you start saying you are 'IN" on everyone, it starts to lose the luster. |

Most Cubs fans were saying "No way. That was way too expensive. They tried but the Cubs made the right choice".bigfan wrote: Brick, you have agreed with me in the past about the poor marketing...and this is an example of it. There are also planes and an interstate highway system. |

Why would he leak a team that is known not to pay up for players of top level. If you leak a team its NY, LA, etc. You dont leak a team that usually doesnt pay up, I think that might create a lowball offer from one of those other teams because they then know all they need to do is offer more than the Sox. |

See ! this is an example of a thread that cant exist with someone here, because he would turn it into his obessions thread or why do you care about me so much or seinfeld pics.... It contains the essence of the bar stool arguments, that some seem incapable of maintaining here...ALL THE TIME. |
