This is worse than Northside Dan's "Cubs sign Lester" thread.

That is, unless the Cubs actually sign Lester.

Agreed. This is one of those times where a player bets on himself and loses.

We're a quarter of the way through the season. Look at his numbers. He's not gonna recover. He's not gonna get whatever Theo offered.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/samarje01.shtml

I say he only gets a 3 year deal at 10 million per year. Maybe only 2 years if his ERA hangs in the mid 4s. I'll bet the Cubs were at least offering 5 years at 16 million per.

It's all about timing, though. If Shark were a free agent after last season somebody would have paid him 100 million over 5 years.

I still think someone offers him 4 years at $60 million, maybe more

Lots of bad contracts get signed offered every off season.

Houston is sniffing around. You're supposed to try to get the best players possible but it would be nice if one of those players is a god damn catcher. That position has been ignored for long enough. Houston doesn't have a top minor league catcher but Toronto (Max Pentecost), New York Yankees (Gary Sanchez), Pittsburgh (Reese McGuire) and Texas (Jorge Alfaro) all do and they should all be in the market for a starting pitcher. It would be nice if Tampa got involved because they have two good catchers in Justin O'Connor and Nick Ciuffo. Zija is getting dealt and it would be nice if they can finally fill this gaping organizational hole.

That's easily turned around by saying since it's well known that there's already a glut of crap contracts, it's irrational to think anyone's going to overwork themselves for the opportunity to over-enrich him at their pay windah, baby.
