#1 College pitcher in draft RHP From BA: Fulmer began his college career as Vanderbilt's closer before transitioning to the rotation in the middle of his sophomore season, helping lead the Commodores to their first-ever national championship. After a successful stint with USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team, he became Vanderbilt's No. 1 starter as a junior and continued to dominate opponents. Despite his outstanding track record, scouts remain mixed on Fulmer. Listed at 6-feet, 195 pounds, he is undersized for a righthander and has an effortful, high-energy delivery. Those factors lead some to see him as a future reliever. But he has a starter's arsenal and has excelled in that role, both for Vanderbilt and Team USA. His fastball sits in the mid 90s, regularly reaching 97 mph, and he holds his velocity deep into games. His power curveball can be a plus pitch and his changeup has above-average potential. He has improved his control this year, but his delivery means he will likely never have better than average command. He earns praise for his makeup and work ethic. Some team will likely give Fulmer a chance to start and hope he can follow fellow Vanderbilt product Sonny Gray's path to success as a big league starter despite his stature. But if a team sends out Fulmer as a reliever, he could fly through the minor leagues. |

I have to say the Sox have been smart the last few years. Get a top rated college pitcher, use him up and sign him long if it works or cut bait before they get too expensive. Easier to get position players than buy pitching later. Not so good on buying those positions but... I think this is opposite of Cubs but that doesn't matter. |

It will be interesting to compare and contrast the two different approaches the Chicago have taken. Fullmer fell just like Rodon..BA had him #3 overall. Meantime the Cubs at ( dipped down and tok Iam Happ a switch hitter, who can play all over the diamond (think Zobrist) BA had him as #24. |

5'11" pitchers are always great long term investments....but hey, Sonny Gray is 5'11" and went to Vandy....so, basically got Sonny Gray II. Would just like to know if Kenny was in on this? |

I know it's not appropriate for me, as a Cubs fan, to mention it. But, I've been following this guy a bit with the Illini run this year and I think this is a nice pick and should be a good player for the Sox. I'll try to think of something insulting to say about the pick later in the day. |
