I heard Stone this morning talking about trading Sale.
He said the Sox shouldn't initiate conversations but should listen if they get a call. Duh!!!
He said you'd have to listen if the Angels called and offered Trout as part of a package.
Sale for Trout - best AL pitcher for the best AL position player.
Part of a package? If I were the Angels, I'd want more than Sale.
No way the Angels would add to the package.

I would need more than Sale if I were the Angels strictly due to the volatility of pitchers and injuries. He's a bad pitch away (as all pitchers are) from TJS and 18 months of being bad.

A starting pitcher in the everday rotation faces 850-950 PA's per season.

An everyday player/hitter makes about 200 fewer PA's per season.

You're off on the first number.

Right now, the pitcher with the highest amount of batters faced per game (Samardzija, surprisingly) is only on pace for ~900. Outside of the top 20 pitchers, you're looking at less than 830 PA. So the "average" pitcher....less than 800 PA.

I went with an average of 32 starts per season. Very few pitchers pitch 35 or more in a season. Sale's career high is 30.

His point still stands. A starting pitcher generally affects more plate appearances than an everyday player.

And as you state often, wins and losses is what it is all about.

If only position players were able to affect the game when they weren't batting.

But their greatest effect is at the plate. There are obviously a handful of elite defensive players at key positions who are superior enough over whoever their replacement would be to matter. But not a whole lot of them. Obviously, Trout would be one of them. I don't think anyone takes the suggested trade seriously.
