Lawers? If the Sox under current or future ownership just picked up and move, despite whatever lease is in place....what are the damages? They actually then save the state and city millions by leaving? This isnt an original lease, so there might not be any language at this point of recovering unammotized monies? maybe a small lump sum? I cant imagine Jerry would sign a lease where something like that is held over him by the State. How do you mitigate damages or calculate them when they dont exist? Maybe even the Bears swoop in and buy a cheap stadium from the state? They could rehab that place for football and do some crazy shit for 1/3 what a new stadium would cost. but, maybe that is the allure of buying the Sox, you can move them anywhere you want. Unless Jerry last will and testament states THE WHITE SOX SHALL NOT BE MOVED*. *Unless one of my affiliated companies is granted the conuslting rights for the relocation and study of a new facility. |

Remember, Jerry has basically given the blessing to sell when he passes. there is the chance that one of his kids gets bored with other stuff at that time and they jump in, but at this time neither kid wants it. Wasnt there a movie about the kid in Minnesota whos grandfather dies and he gets the team because he was a fan? Joey Reinsdorf, come on down! |

While the Sox have been mismanaged to oblivion under Weird Jerry and the old ex-athletes he fetishizes, I still believe Chicago can support two baseball teams. I should like to think that new ownership would see the higher ceiling of operating in Chicago as opposed to some backwater like Portland or Raleigh-Durham. I say this as a person who hates the Sox, of course. |

Like or dislike doesnt change a shrunken fan base. Its why I dont really focus on the attendance, they have shrunk their own fanbase, thus the attendance will never be there. You can think a new owner is going to do something, but that battle is over. The Cubs won the populatity battles and they are now just reinforcing the empire. No billionaire is looking at this and thinking he can win over the fans of Chicago that are Cubs fans and I hate to say it, but those you do win over will have the poor economic base that wont fiancially support you. Thus moving to a city of 1 mill people. Like San Antonio? Where some ties exist to this Sox team. Being the only team in town is much better than losing this war. |

Who's to say ownership that isn't openly contemptuous of its customers can't re-energize the base? Attendance and interest ebbs and flows with almost every team. I don't think the Cubs are "reinforcing an empire" at all right now. They're only now picking up the pieces after they willfully made themselves terrible and alienating for several years. If all they've done here is build another iteration of the 2000s Minnesota Twins that maybe make the playoffs and lose when they do, there's no empire there. Maybe the Ted Cruz doppelganger has a real estate empire so he can control every revenue stream, but nothing that will forever preclude interest in a second team. Chicago can and should support two baseball teams just like NY, LA, the DMV, and the Bay Area. It's simply incumbent upon the White Sox to give a shit about their business and not just be some way for Jerry Reinsdorf to say "screw all y'all" to the world. |

Ch you are dreaming.... 1. winning ups attendance. Thats it. Which is great. Takes years of winning or losing to move a fanbase AND while the Sox might win at some point it wont be for an extended period of time and the Cubs arent going back to 3 years of losing. The share of preferred demo wars is over and the Sox have lost. 2. To say the Cubs are not building an empire is really missing the boat. Do you understand the amusement park of cash they are building and will build? From the rooftops, to their own yawkey way, to the plaza to the hotel, to a new TV deal. The sources of cash are going to be endless. Does that guarantee anything? Nope, but being able to add top flight free agents every year, brings true and real playoff runs annually as part of the team, which produces more and more. Have to win games for these cash machines to run as well! ONE and not the only reason, the Sox are going for it now and next year is due to the Cubs pressure. They cant afford to not go for it now and lose anymore market share. They are at a 30 year low in season ticket holders! With the chance to drop below 5,000 season ticket holders this offseason. The Rays have 3,800 season ticket holders....3800! You say this city can support a second team...and thats right....but they have chose not to...and that is evident. If someone else bought this team first they need guarantees they can extend the favorable lease for as long as they want...or buy the park for $1. None of it makes sense for a billinoaire to do...now, maybe there is a billinaire Sox fan hanging in the shadows, who loves the Sox so much he cant stand moving them outside of Chicago, but if thats the plan, good luck. if they stay here, of course it will get better someday. Jerry's regime of breakfast buddies will be gone, Hawk, Coop, Kenny, Farmio and the rest of the old guy fight club will be gone, they will understanding branding in the positive sense. All, said, this team has a long road to even get back to respectable on all levels. It needs to start over....and that would include moving. |
