Dad doesn't want him, doesn't trouble Kenny

Hasn't been good in four years but still an upgrade over last year.

This may bring me back to being a White Sox fan.

We may win two offseasons in a row.

from Fangraphs

2015 Soto .219 BA .301 OBP .406 Slg .708 OPS DEF 4.9 War 1.1 32Y/O signed by Oakland 1yr 2.5 mil
2015 Avila .191 BA .339 OBP .287 Slg .626 OPS DEF 1.8 War 0.5 28 Y/O signed by Sox 1yr 2.5 mil

How is this an upgrade? What am I not seeing?

The long Khahn continues......

So enlighten me ....

Reading most of the posts from other Sox I thought the 2015 were weak at Catcher (among other positions) and overall team defense and power...

Avila has less power and is weaker defensibly... he and Soto signed the exact same deal 1 year 2.5 mil... as Danny B would ..how does this signing move you closer to the championship?

So I will wait for your brilliant analytical breakdown on how and why this move improves your team.

Thanks in advance for your time and insight.

Frank, do you think Avila is an upgrade?

Hard to argue with those numbers.

I think he has a higher ceiling than Flowers and Soto. After a down injury plagued year, I'll take my chances.

Soto was also a backup last year, so don't let biginquisifan fool you.

The obvious response is that it was an injury year for Avila. He is 28 years old, so really just entering his prime with a bounce back year a reasonable expectation. While he might not frame as well (subjective and overrated stat by the way) as Soto he does throw out runners at a higher percentage and would generally be considered a better defender. Last year's war is low compared to the rest of his career. He gets on base at a pretty decent clip, even in his bad years.

That said, I'm not expecting much of an upgrade. Give me better defense and a higher OBP and I am OK with this. Dioneer Navarro was my guy but he is older and no lock to be much better.

I slightly prefer Avila but he is a major injury risk.
