1984, Jerry buys the Bulls majority interest for $10 M, thus valuing the team around $20M, today worth $850 mill per Forbes.

This does not include the close to $100 mill in annual profits they churned out in the 6 post jordan years of sell outs and the lowest payroll in the league.

So not only did you give your investors more of a cash return than they could have ever imagined in addition to having maybe the most valuable tickets to "a scene" in Chicago sports history (The Sweater Club), but the principal is worth 40 to 50 times the investment.

Being that it is 'mostly' the same investors as in the Sox group, why would you care if Jerry called you every 5 years and asked you for $5 mill to run the Sox. You wouldnt..and thats how Jordan saved the Sox.

Before the Sox fans get all upset and try to tell me it is not the same people, that is correct, it is not 100% the same people, but it is about 90% of the same guys.

That's exactly right. That's why when you hear someone say, "the Sox are at their max payroll", it's absolute bullshit. The only guy who knows what the Sox budget is is Jerry Reinsdorf. Nope, Rick Hahn doesn't know and Kenny Williams doesn't know. They may know what Jerry okay'd, but if Jerry decides he wants to pay Josh Hamilton or Zack Greinke, that will be that. And the Sox group might grumble, but ultimately they're going along with Jerry. He's made them stacks of cash so far, they're along for the ride. And as you point out, the Sox and Bulls groups are pretty damn similar, especially the main guys.

It was one hell of an investment for ole Jerry and the boys for sure. Some times you get lucky. My hats off to him and his fellow investors.

Yeah, that's what makes the Score's browbeating of middle-to-working-class consumers so frustrating, shifting the blame from the players and management to the fans who are supposedly giving Kenny Williams insufficient funds to run his team. Yeah, as if with all the money from television and sponsorships, Kenny's trade deadline hinges on whether some families of four from the Paloses go sit in the upper deck three times a year instead of one. And then after all is said and done and attendance was low and racism was alleged, they pull $30 million out of their ass and extend Jake Peavy. Hating black people by not spending money in an Irish neighborhood just doesn't go as far as it used to go.

According to Forbes, the White Sox have been profitable every year since 2003 when the records they have start. The team value has also gone from $233 million to $600 million. Obviously, that doesn't include the 90s, but the White Sox are an independent revenue generation machine now and have been since 2003 at least.

The player expenses have also mirrored the major increase in revenue.

If anything, Jerry is simply telling his investors they'll get less profit right now for paying players with the idea that they will be a billion dollar baseball team by the end of 2020.

How much did their value increase relative to the values of other major league teams? I think the bubble will burst before the value of the team can increase another 67% in seven years. All these teams being worth a billion dollars each is getting ridiculous. The good times can't last forever.

I respect JR for running his teams like a business. For anyone that commits capital, they have every right to try to earn a return on capital. Sports teams can be tricky in this regard because fans view these teams as public goods. Just because he timed his purchases in such a way that they are sitting on large capital gains does not mean he should have to shell out investors' money to subsidize a payroll. If the fans want a bigger payroll, then show up to the park. The Sox have been good enough in the Kenny era to justify going to games.

In 2003 they were 18th. Now, they are 10th and likely to pass up a few other teams in the next few years like the Mets. That is where the money has come from.

I predict that some time in the next 5 years the White Sox use the Phillies model(over the same time period they've gone from 16th to 5th in valuation) of going huge on player salaries attempting to further increase the brand by being elite every year.

Shouldnt be hard to turn a profit when your infrastructure costs (Rent, Maintenance, Utilities, etc) are lower than any MLB team. Fact, they only pay rent....nothing else. Every light bulb, electric, gas, water, insurance bill, are paid by the state. Oh and the new T shirt shop and Bacardi at the Park cost the Sox nothing, yet all the revenue goes to them as well. No rent on those either!

$214 - $11(profit) - $138(player costs) = $65 million for all other costs
$266 - $28(profit) - $166 = $72 million for all other costs

First is for Sox, Second is for Cubs.

This was known about 10 years ago. I'm glad your sources finally broke the story to you.

Back to the original premise. A businessman would be very dumb to start pulling cash from one parallel business to another. They must remain separate.
