LTG, effective shooting % weighs three point shots appropriately. It allows for comparison across generations (at least those that had a 3-point line). It gives 50% more weight to 3-point shots, as it should. It basically accounts for the percentage someone scores per shot. Three-pointers should not be viewed equally to two-pointers, in terms of percentage. If you and IMU each shoot 100 shots, with him shooting only 3's and you shooting only 2's, he only has to make 30 to score the same amount of points as you would if you made 45. That's a big difference. If the game has evolved as a result, it doesn't make Magic, MJ, or Isaiah any worse. However, if they played today, it's fair to say that they may need to adapt to be viewed in the same light they were during their era.

I understand that and it was the same argument that they used in the 80's when they attempted to encourage guys to shoot more threes. They crunched the numbers and compared the percentages. Everything you say is absolutely correct.

I wouldn't say that the change in emphasis has made the game better. The 85 Lakers averaged 118 ppg. They played faster and took better shots. The game was played inside out and guys were able to get better shots as a result. It's nothing worse than seeing guys running around and scheming to take 3 point shots all game long.

The inside game is non existent. Mid range shots are a foreign concept. Guys are passing up good shots because the 3 is considered a more "efficient" shot.

If that's the case then why is scoring much lower? Mind you they hand checked in the 80's and the game was much more physical.

The Lakers also shot 55% from the field. This suggest that they took better shots. You took the first shot available if it was your shot. Guys definitely didn't run to the 3 point line on a fast break either. Guys would laugh at you for a week if you did that. It was understood that you were to get layups on fast breaks.

You raise some valid points, and I honestly don't know off the top of my head... however, if I had to make an educated guess, I'd say that those teams ran... a lot... and had many more possessions per game (I'm sure we could find out). I don't think many of the Shiwtime Lakers teams were considered to be defensive juggernauts, correct?

The 90s Bulls scored way less, especially with the second threepeat.

Yeah the Lakers ran and got a lot of layups. The only two guys on their team that were considered to be decent shooters were Scott and Cooper. They played the game below the free throw line and it was obviously effective. They were not much in terms of defense. Cooper was considered their stopper and he came off of the bench. They took good shots and thus they shot a high percentage.

What position does McDermott play?

Imu you are being a bit of a hypocrite. You consider Noah garbage when he is good or superior in every facet of the game except outside shooting and scoring. This kind of proves my point don't you think?

Does being right about an internet argument on a message board in 2016 concerning NBA 3 point shooting make anyone's life better? Fuck...

After a 125 and pages (and counting) of Julie Di Caro posts any and quite everything should be in play on here. For the record, it actually does make my life better. Can't speak for the other guys however.

Seriously, should a sports debate on a sports message board (what a novel concept) really offend you all that much? That's the larger and actually more relevant question as far as I'm concerned. It's a sports message board. That is sort of where these types of discussions are supposed to take place if you haven't noticed.

No player should be judged solely on one aspect of the game. Or even two. They are judged on what they bring overall to a team.

Noah has been decent in the past.

He was bad last year.

Not sure I ever called him garbage. I believe this is something else you're making up. Find a quote.

I never said that I "hate" Jamal Crawford or Taj but that never stop you from using the word in conjunction with me now did it? Stop with the semantics. You don't like Noah and thought he wasn't very good. I'm not looking up the word. It's weak and "tedious ". Now look that word up. Something tells me that you don't know the meaning. I'm not being facetious either.

I never said Noah was garbage, shitty, trash, a loser, a terrible basketball player, a joke, etc. etc. There are no semantics here. Find the post where I disparaged Noah the greatest...you'll find it isn't that bad. I was a detractor of his when he came out of college...he won me over in later seasons with his smart basketball and defense...and he has lost that recently due to injury, probably. In the 'Bulls Hall of Very Good' thread, I said he would be in there as one of the top Bulls centers of all time. How exactly is that me ripping on Noah? Find the goddamn posts.

The board has a read on when you know you're wrong...you go straight to personality insults. Your poker face blows.

If you want to throw me...grab some olde english words or something. Don't use a seventh grader's vocabulary test.

A 7th grader's vocabulary test would probably be 2 levels higher than your competency level. I will save the personal invective. You may want to look that up also.

I love how you use generalities to further your argument (The Board). Speak for yourself.
You cited statistics probably false to suggest 80's basketball sucked. I countered with other statistics which support the commonly held belief that 80's basketball was far superior.

On the Noah front you are not a fan and the reason that I say that is when the guy was playing well you suggested that he was playing crappy. Every metric except shooting demonstrated that he was playing well but you cited the one stat where he wasn't playing well to support a narrative that was false. If I inferred that you thought he was garbage, then it was exaggeration not necessarily false. If you want to play the semantic game which is also a norm, then I'm being presumptuous based upon statements that you have made. Statements such "he was decent" during his good yrs. Noah made all star teams during his good yrs which suggest that he was more than decent. If i infer that you think he is garbage now it is merely based upon words that you have used.

You make things up all the time. Remember the scouting report regarding Portis/Thomas. It was supposed to read that they were the same player? Did you ever own up to making that up?

i know that it has digressed a little from the original premise. i will admit that at least.

Sorry Boys. The game is on CSN. I guess I was channeling my interest in James ass-fucking Kobe on ESPN at the same time.
