First I heard of that. Sounds like bullshit though. As I've been saying for weeks it is in the Bulls best interest to sign and trade for him because it allows them to keep their exceptions. That's why Boozer hasn't been cut yet.

Stein is also saying most observers think Melo is sticking with NY. Says Gasol is waiting to see what Melo does before he makes a move.

Whatever. I'm now cool with the Bulls bringing Mirotic over, playing the rookie, and seeing what kind of a middle class they can develop that fills the talent void between Rose, Noah, and tertiary players.

I would be shocked if Gasol goes to NY for a little over $3M.

If Melo comes to Chicago to "win", he would be smart to sign a two year deal only. Take less money to get the players you want on the team and try to win.

NBA gets a new TV deal in 2 years, cap will rise, and he can negotiate a new contract to get big bucks. Still young enough to get a huge deal.

Bulls wouldn't have his Bird rights if he only signs for 2 years.

Dirk signs in Dallas. Perhaps a clue that Cuban thinks Melo is a lost cause, not that his team was the favorite anyway.

I'm still hopeful. That being said there are still enough options that can make the Bulls a championship contender. He was the best option to me other than LeBron.

Gasol not coming either, though I don't care much about that. They'll supplement the existing core with third tier free agents. Contenders are still OKC, SA, Miami*, and LAC. I f Melo goes to Houston then they become a contender too. The Bulls' model should now be the Spurs. The only problem is they need the rookie, Snell, and Mirotovic to become reliable contributors quickly. If not then they still don't have enough to compete.

I would take a gamble on Stevenson if Melo says no. It could really pay off with his age. Offer him a 3 or 4 year deal with an average of $10M a year.

I agree, Thibs would work his magic with him. It would also allow them to move Butler to the 3, which would probably be a better fit.

Per CSN Chicago….

Well, this could make things more interesting for the Bulls and their pursuit of free agent Carmelo Anthony.

According to an ESPN report on Thursday night, the Lakers offered Anthony as big a deal as they could: a four-year max contract worth $95 million.

Anthony met with the Lakers on Thursday, getting a presentation that included Lakers brass, Hall of Famer James Worthy and a representative from the film industry who reportedly showed Anthony a slickly produced trailer for his life in LA.

Now, as much money as that is, Anthony could still get more from the Knicks, and it's well known that his current franchise can offer him the biggest contract. It's what has made the Knicks favorites all along in the eyes of many observers. The Bulls — and the Lakers, for that matter — can't match what the Knicks can offer. Phil Jackson and the Knicks also met with Anthony on Thursday in California with hopes of convincing the star to stay in New York.

It's unknown whether the Bulls intend to offer Anthony the most they can. Though the Lakers' roster is viewed as less ready-to-win than the Bulls'.

Still, as they say, money talks. And the Lakers seem to be doing an awful lot of talking with their reported offer.

Think the Bulls can only touch $70m. Don't see him leaving that much on the table.

The Bulls were always going to try to do a sign and trade. That's why Boozer hasn't been cut yet.

Prudent for the Bulls to hold on to Boozer, but doesn't mean PJ is going to play along. Woj has got a story up that says Melo plans to or already has tried to recruit Gasol to NY. If PJ won't accept Boozer in a deal as he reportedly said, then Anthony will realize that going to Chicago means leaving too much money on the table. May just settle for Calderon and Gasol as new teammates with at least 115 million in the bank.

Lazy piece by CSN imo. Everyone knows the Knicks can offer the max while teams with space like LA can only go up to 96 or so million. How much money the Lakers or Knicks can or will offer isn't a revelation. The useful insight they did provide is pointing out the Lakers suck, even with Melo. Same thing with the Knicks. The best rosters involved are Chicago and the Texas teams. Melo can force a trade to one of them or just sign with the Knicks. It looks like the Knicks.

The Knicks are only able to over Gasol a little less than $4M a year regardless of the deal Melo signs. He's not going to NY for that type of money. If Melo tells Phil he wants to sign with the Bulls then Phil will take back Boozer's expiring contract. As I suggested earlier he will want to dump JR Smith on the Bulls and will likely want Mirotic and draft picks.

Well, he'll need the money to fund PR campaigns ten years from now about how he was a great player for the league despite choosing money over wins when he had the chance.

I can see Gasol taking a pay cut to join Melo, Calderon, and PJ. that's probably what Melo is asking him to do now. Phil can do what you said, but he doesn't have to facilitate the deal if Melo wants out. Melo knows either forcing a sign and trade or resigning with NY are his best options. If he wants a trade, then PJ has the leverage and he's got no obligation to trade him.

You are right. I know that they would be the best team in the East with Melo and I believe that they could beat the Heat (if healthy) without Melo.

Ill disagree with that. Bulls don't move nor shoot the ball well enough (ala SA) to beat Miami.

I think Gasol wants a title and a Calderón and Melo may not make the playoffs. That's why I can't see him taking a deal like that. The Thunder are offering nearly $6M.

You're right Phil doesn't have to but teams do it all the time. He the Cavs did a sign and trade with LeBron after he destroyed their franchise.

They move the ball well. With $13M to spend (if Melo doesn't come) I believe that they will have enough shooters. Already McDermott is a major step in the right direction.

What is "FINE?" Top 3 in a horrible East? Patchwork bullshit team with a china doll #1?

NO. I refuse to accept your premise!
