Play him while he's hot.

You believe in that?

Believe in what? Players getting hot? Yes.

Even though the debate resurfaced recently, it still seems like the majority of evidence indicates there's no such thing. I think it might exist, but in extremely small sample sizes. Rose wasn't gonna score 60 tonight. Also, when your last basket goes off the backboard and rolls around the rim before going in, I'm not sure you're hot. You might just be lucky. Especially if you're shooting 40% for the year.

But yeah, Hoiberg definitely did not cost them this game.

Whitey wang whipped a wang whipper!!!!!

McBuckets dunked on a superior black athlete. Take that, Bernstein.

Ok. Not really. The defender was blocked by the rim. It was about the angle and he barely dunked it. Almost missed the rim.

John Kirk Rule regarding Hoiberg.

And players absolutely get hot in basketball. You don't even need stats to see that. It's not just about shooting. If a guy feels good physically, it makes a big difference.

Probably. I'm a lot more concerned with their abysmal defense, particularly transition defense, than subbing Rose out 2-3 minutes earlier than usual in a game in January.

Pretty damn clear. Rose wants to show up Curry. Wants to be the better player on national TV. But why not be this way when you play the Nets and the Suns on a Tuesday when it's not a national game?

We are just commenting on a single game, not extrapolating into June. Relax.

Of course. The point is those same players don't stay hot, and if they do it's a fluke. Of course confidence is important and you'll do better if you're feeling good and confident. That's true in every facet of life.

Right. Some perspective is needed though. Namely, that we are commenting on a single game in January.

That is not a joke

I guess you'd have to define "getting hot", but no, I don't agree. When I said of course, I assumed you were referring to someone making like 5 or 6 shots in a row. There's nothing to disagree with there. Everything I've read seems to indicate that there's no such thing as a hot hand. It's like one of the most famous sports studies ever. You've never heard of the hot hand fallacy? Anyway, as I mentioned earlier, I guess there's new evidence regarding those studies, but nothing that's been officially published and reviewed yet.

I have not heard of it, but the data would have to be pretty convincing. I'm sure we can all relate to those times playing sports when things moved more slowly, we saw the ball better, we had more bounce in our step, and it seemed like everything we did was working. It's anecdotal, but it was so obvious when it happened that I have a hard time believing we all just imagined it.

You're right and FF is wrong. We've all seen it and some of us have experienced it.

You can't just say I'm wrong here. Technically, I have three decades of studies backing me up, and you and leash have intuition. I know what leash is saying, and I imagine most here do. But I think you, him, and others are way too ready to project that on to someone who just happened to make a few shots in a row. The flip side to what you and leash are talking about is the guy who starts the game 1-15 and scores 20 in the 4th. We've seen that plenty of times too. The simple fact is there is overwhelming data suggesting you are no more likely to make your next shot if you made your previous one. "The Zone" that leash is referring to is not easy to get into, and I'd imagine it's more difficult at the pro level.

Yeah but in the end as a player are you saying you're not going to look to feed someone whose hit three in a row? I agree with what you're saying but as a decision maker on the court I doubt you're going to think in terms of the data you're citing. You're going to look to feed that guy or shoot yourself if you're the one on fire.

Well, that's different. Part of a coach's main job is to make decisions based on logic and data, not emotion. I'm not going to criticize a coach for doing something that seems counter intuitive if the data backs him up on his decision.
