Basketball was a young game. It's why it's evolved so much since then. Had it began 25 years earlier, then maybe Bill Russell would be a 6'9" PF who shot a good percentage and have natural and not mechanical basketball moves.

I'm sorry 1960 skill leveled players would get their asses handed to them today. It's not their fault. It's not so with baseball. Because it's an older sport. Mickey Mantle would still be Mickey Mantle in 2024.

Humans did not "evolve" in 2 or 3 generations.

No. They just became full time from age 3.

And yet, as Dr. Style points out, they lack almost all fundamentals.

When I was in seventh grade we had an entire gym unit on basketball. I hated it. The brothers just wanted to get out there and run and the white boys wanted to play floor hockey. But Mr. Fleming had this book on basketball fundamentals that we used. There was about 50 pages on various "Fakes and Feints" which was the name of the chapter. I bet if you asked most NBA players today to feint, they would fall on the floor.

How many hours did Bill Russell put into basketball compared to Derrick Rose? What kind of sophistication of coaching and training was there in 1960. The GAME evolved. The player today has 'enhancements'.

While I will grant you that is better than in the 60's it's not a better game than it was in the 80's. You have point guards today who can't be bothered with learning how to pass and dribble. Centers that cannot perform a simple drop step nor learn to play with their back to the basket. And the shot selection is horrendous

Agreed. I'm not sure if we'll ever see high IQ/experienced, well rounded basketball like that ever again.

Remember when they stopped calling carrying so Jordan could palm the ball from underneath on every dribble?

Started with Maravich, accelerated with AI. Unfortunately, I can't say say Jordan invented it. Wish I could.

Mantle would still be supremely talented, but he would not put up the numbers he did in the 50's and 60's because the rank and file baseball player is more talented now than he was at that time. MLB is pulling in players from all over the world and those players are full time professional athletes, rather than guys who would have to do something else during the off season, or who would truly take the off season off.

He'd make it up by not being hungover every game. He also would've never torn up his knee on an outfield drain.

Now, I'm not going to sit here and say Pee Wee Reese would be playing today, but the main point is MLB was much more mature as a sport in the '60's than basketball.

Pee Wee Reese and George Mikan would be wearing white helmets and riding the short bus if they were around today. I doubt they would even be able to walk alongside the current evolved human specimens like Brick and Dr. Style.

Pretty cool photo I took at the very beginning of the ceremony. If I was a couple seconds late, I couldn't have captured it as the graphics kept changing.
